John E. "Sam" Stover Jr. age 87 of Rochelle formerly of Ashton passed away on Tuesday Aug. 28, 2024 at Rochelle Rehab and Healthcare in Rochelle, IL. He was born on May 20, 1937 in Dixon the son of John and Catherine (Virnich) Stover. Sam was a truck driver and worked for Swift & Co. in Rochelle for 37 years. He was also a volunteer fireman for the Ashton Fire Dept. for 11 years. Sam married Hazel "Marty" Marwood on Sept. 28, 1991 in Roselle, IL. She preceded him in death on Dec. 20, 2023. He is also preceded in death by his sister Alice Swinton, brother Jim Lawler, two grandchildren Stevie Dodillet and Robert Brigante, sister in law Sally Stover, brother in law Mo Swinton. Sam is survived by his children Robert (Susan) Stover of Ashton, Richard (Renee) Stover of Ashton, one grandson Shane (Karley) Stover, five great grandsons Dylan (Bailey) Stover, Lucas Mendez, Landin Landa, Noah Landa, and Lucas Landa. He is also survived by two step daughters Penny Carpenter of Roselle, Patti Hall of Dixon, one step grandson Benjamin Hall, two brothers Bill Stover of Dixon, Don (Sandi) Stover of Ashton, and one sister Carol (Don) Mall of Dixon. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday Sept. 14, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon. Visitation will be on Saturday Sept. 14, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the church. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at Ashton Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Ashton Fire Dept. Arrangements by the Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. Condolences can be left at www.thejonesfh.com.

I remember a party at the Stover Boys home, late 70's early 80's. Sam was there keeping an eye on things, he was sitting on the tailgate of a truck. I went over and sat there with him for a while he and i just talked and people watched. He was funny, and he was kind.
