Larry W. Mewhirter, 79, of Rock Falls, died March 1, 2023 at Rock River Hospice & Home.
He was born on October 22, 1943 in Sterling, the son of Donald Arthur and Doris Eleanor (Smith) Mewhirter and was a graduate of Rock Falls High School. He served in the US Marine Corps as a veteran of the Vietnam War from 1962-1968. Larry was employed at Northwestern Steel and Wire Co retiring as Yard Master. He married Karen Unterzuber on August 17, 2001. He was a member of the Sterling American Legion Post 296. He enjoyed grilling / cooking, fishing and working crosswords. He was an avid NASCAR fan and Dallas Cowboys fan.
Survivors his wife Karen; his sons: Tim (Christine) Mewhirter of the Villages, FL and Jared (Kimberley) Mewhirter of Rock Falls; his daughter Donna (Jack) Miller of Stockton, IL; his brothers: Donald (Pat) Mewhirter of Rock Falls and Jack (Debie) Mewhirter of St. Louis; his half-sisters: Pam (Bob) Claradie of Sterling and Sue (Rusty) Hacker of Fulton; three grandchildren: Samantha, Jack Jr and Paige.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Charlotte Roger and half-brother Craig Dewald.
A gathering of friends and family will take place on Monday, March 6, 2023 from 12:30 – 1:30 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory in Rock Falls. The service will follow at 1:30 PM with the Reverend Bob Clardie officiating. Burial will conclude with military honors at Oak Knoll Memorial Park.
