Lawrence 'Larry' W. Banas

STERLING – Lawrence "Larry" Walter Banas, 73, of Sterling, passed away Saturday, April 24, 2021, at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, IL. He worked as a skilled contract painter for many years, finishing his career in the maintenance department at Dixon Correctional Center for 13 years.
Larry was born February 28, 1948, in Chicago, IL, the son of Harry and Dorothy (Peterson) Banas. He married Carol (Haig) Hager on October 27, 1990, in Oak Brook, IL. He attended St. Anne Catholic Church in Dixon and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling. Larry was a member of Moose Lodge #727 and past member of Dixon Elks Lodge #779. Larry enjoyed golfing at any course in the area. Larry and Carol loved spending their winters at Miramar Beach in Destin, FL
.Larry was a loving and devoted husband, brother, stepdad and grandfather. He had a knack for making his family and friends laugh with his witty one-liners, stories and infectious smile. Larry lived his life wearing his loving heart and emotions on his sleeve. These personal qualities made it easy to instantly connect and bond with him. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Carol Banas of Sterling; four stepchildren, Tom (Kathy) Hager of Oak Park, IL, Kristin Deyle, Ryan (Michelle) Hager both of St. Charles, Elizabeth (Frank) Gazzolo of Riverside; ten grandchildren, Mary Kate Hager, TJ Hager, Jadyn Deyle, Jake Hager, Rylee Hager, Frankie Gazzolo, Ella Gazzolo, Finley Gazzolo, Korbyn (Chad) Steichen, and Logan McCombs; one great-grandchild, Easton Steichen; two siblings Gary (Nan) Banas of Panama City, FL, Mary (David) Ball of Elmhurst; and many nieces and nephews
.Larry was preceded in death by his parents; and two siblings, Terrance "Terry" Banas and Sherri Davis.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2021, at the Preston-Schilling Funeral Home, Ltd., Dixon, IL, followed by a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m,. Friday, April 30, 2021, at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home, Ltd., Dixon, IL, with Father Bruce Ludeke officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be held at a later date. Cremation will be accorded following the services.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
