Leon Robert Sell, also known as Lee and Dad and affectionately known as Pop, of Rock Falls, died Friday, December 12, 2025 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.
Leon was born April 2, 1928, the same year as Mickey Mouse. (He liked to brag about it)! The son of Frederick and Lizzie, he grew up in Allentown, PA, with his sister, Evelyn, and brother, Robert. As soon as he could, he joined the Navy, turning it into a 20-year career. Travels took him to San Diego, Saipan, Maine, and Cuba to name a few. After retirement, he continued to join the Seabees reunions as often as possible. He was also honored with the Honor Flight. Being a veteran and a Mason meant a lot to him.
Leon married Joan Wright Crossland on April 4, 1960. They settled the family here in Rock Falls and he worked as an Electrical Superintendent at Northwestern Steel and Wire.
Pop was one of those guys who never lost his "inner child". He was curious, mischievous, forever fun-loving, and always an instigator. Equally, he had a beautiful Dad-Mode. He was very compassionate, understanding, and totally devoted.
He gave us a wonderful family life. He gave us the world through awesome vacations and spoiled us thoroughly. His arms were always open and his love was never ending. He gave the kind of hugs you felt through your bones.
He had a huge family, but if you crossed paths with him, you became as important as his family. He's given us a heartful of memories, making him truly unforgettable. His kindness has become his legacy. It was felt everywhere he went. As we remember him, let's continue to spread Pop's kindness.
As he was growing weak, he could see we were growing strong. It was time he joined his love, on December 12, 2025, again……Dancing in the sky and singing in the angels choir.
He is survived by six children, Steve (Kathy) of WA, Mike of CA, Jodi (Beto) of Rock Falls, Jackie (Bryan) of Rock Falls, Lori (Mark) of Rock Falls, and Linda of NC; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
He was preceded by his wife, Joan Sell; parents; one son, Jim; one brother; and one sister.
Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. There are no services.
