Melvin F. Heckman, age 87, of Dixon died Wednesday May 22, 2024 at KSB Hospital in Dixon. He was born Aug. 29, 1936 in Polo the son of Frederick "Fritz" and Doris (Russell) Heckman. Melvin was a firefighter at the Dixon State School and served as President of the firefighters union. He had also worked for Wright Tree Service of 30 years and ended his career as a Forman for Asplundh Tree Service. He also owned and operated his own tree service for many years.
He served in the Illinois National Guard and was a member of NEBF. He was a beloved family man and an avid fisherman.
Melvin married Marlene Garwick July 22, 1961 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Larry, one sister Doris A Mighell and brothers in law Gerald Satterfield and Sherman Shilling.
Melvin is survived by his wife Marlene, children Lisa (David) Miller of Champaign, Tracy (Scott) Holden of Phoenix, AZ, one grandson Cale Holden, 2 step grandsons Christopher (Erica) Miller and Samuel (Rachel) Miller and 9 step great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Jim Heckman of Mansfield, IL, four sisters Shirley Satterfield of Rockford, Melanie (Vincent) Stonecipher of Dixon, Mary (Tom) Kaderly of Florida and Loretta Shilling of Dixon.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Kreider Services or First Responders. Arrangements by the Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. Online condolences can be left at www.thejonesfh.com
