Phoebe went to heaven early Monday morning, July 10, 2023, at her home in Goose Creek, SC, at age 86. She was born in Denver, CO, December 3, 1936, and was the youngest of 7 children. She married Vernon L. Ex in 1951 and welcomed three children who survive her: Teresa Starnes of Hanahan, SC; L. Joyce Ex (Steve Lubeskie) of Goose Creek, SC and Lowell Ex of Ladson, SC. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren: Jennifer Middleton (Bobby); Ashley Starnes; Chelsea Ex-Lubeskie; Chris Starnes (Itzel); Connor Ex-Lubeskie (Haley); Harley Murphy; Savanna Middleton and Abigail Collie.
Phoebe, also known as Punk, was larger than life. Going from a GED to a Master's Degree in Nursing, she had an illustrious and storied career as a medical professional. She worked at several hospitals in Charleston, SC, as well as Little Rock, AR. Phoebe loved working with Veterans was the Assistant Director of Nursing at the Charleston VA Hospital for 12 years. She retired from nursing in 1998. After retirement, Phoebe lived in Sallisaw, OK; Rock Falls, Ill; and then permanently returned to Charleston, SC in 2004 where she enjoyed retired life with her children, grandchildren, neighbors, bunco buddies and other friends.
Phoebe was a feisty lady with a heart of gold who dearly loved her family, friends and her poodle, Layla. In her younger years she coached softball, baked and decorated cakes, bowled and played bingo. Phoebe loved babies, and loved to tell stories. She always pulled for the underdog and would do anything for anybody. This independent, strong-minded woman is deeply loved and will be sorely missed. If you knew her, then you know.
There will be a graveside service for Phoebe at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 15, 2023 at the IOOF, Coloma Township Cemetery, Rock Falls, Illinois. Ken McNinch, Phoebe's nephew, will officiate. There is no visitation. Arrangements were completed by the McDonald's Funeral Home in Rock Falls.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Phoebe on July 22, 2023 from 1 -3 p.m. at her daughter's house in Goose Creek, SC. for family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations on behalf of Phoebe may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
