Arthur G. "Artie" Smith Jr.

Arthur Smith Obituary

Arthur "Artie" G. Smith, Jr. - SAVANNAH - Arthur "Artie" Godfrey Smith, Jr., 78, of Savannah, Georgia, died Thursday afternoon, April 18, 2008, at his home. The son of Arthur G. Smith and Laliah Price Smith, he is survived by his sister Sara Jane, brother Larry, and sisters Mary Ann and Frances. After attending Armstrong college he graduated from George Washington University with honors. He then lived in Texas serving 4 years in the Air Force before returning home and becoming one of the pioneers in the restoration of downtown Savannah. Arthur's pride and joy was the renovation of the Smithfield cottage on Hall Street. He lived there for over 30 years before turning it over to SCAD where it stands as a graduate studies center that was dedicated in his honor last year. Mr. Smith enjoyed the finer things in life: traveling abroad, music, and the arts, but most of all his family. His other passion of 48 years was 'Arthur Smith Antiques' that continues living in the heart of Savannah. 'Artie' is a true legend and his zeal for life and unsurpassed sense of humor will be sorely missed... We love you. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue. The funeral service will be held at 12 noon Monday in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service. Interment will be in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park - East. Remembrances: First Church of Christ, Scientist - 211 East Victory Drive, Savannah, Georgia 31405. Our dearest brother,
John and I miss you and your silliness. You always knew to make us feel special and loved. We never had to ask you for anything. Our mom taught you well. When John and I were home during 9/11/01,you helped us get a rental car so we could get home. I enjoyed working with you. Remember the live roach you put on my foot when I was little? I didn't think it was funny then, now I laugh at it. Mom had to stop me from hitting you. I'm glad she did. We love and miss you, mom and all our angels in Heaven. Last Saturday was my birthday. John and I had a good time. It would have been better with all our Heaven angels.

I am so sorry to hear of Arthur's passing. I worked at his antique shop and have many lovely memories of Arthur as an employer and a friend. I will always remember him for his kind and generous nature - and his fatherly advice.

Dear Larry and Girls,
I was so sorry to read of Arthur's passing. I've known the family for many years. First through my mother Frances Ubele Cates (west broad gang) when we lived on 65th street.
I am now living in Virginia. I have thought often about all of you, many
times. Again my deepest sympathy,

Margie Cates Herring
