Carl Espy Obituary

Carl Espy III, 87, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Jane Freed Espy, died Thursday afternoon, June 7, 2018, at his home with his family at his side. He was born in Taylor, TX to Eloise Geer Espy and Carl Espy, Jr. on December 30, 1930 and moved home to Savannah in 1933. He was a graduate of the Lawrenceville School and Yale University with a degree in engineering. He served 2 1/2 years in the United States Army Counter Intelligence Corps (Army CIC), including duty in Washington, DC and in French Morocco. He worked for Savannah Foods & Industries for 39 years in the engineering, sales and raw sugar departments and retired as a corporate officer.

He is predeceased by his parents and by his first wife, Ann Tew Espy.

He was a member and former senior warden of Christ Church Episcopal and also served on the Diocesan Council of the Diocese of Georgia. He served on the board of the Savannah Public Library, was President of the Savannah Speech and Hearing Center and President of the Royce Center. He was a member and past President of the Oglethorpe Club, a past President of the Cotillion Club, a member of the Savannah Golf Club, the Society of the Cincinnati, the Century Club, the Society of the Colonial Wars and the Cosmos Club. He also served as a volunteer for Hospice and at Inner City Night Shelter.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; his sister, Lolly Barton of Newtown, PA (partner Bruce); and by his children, Carl Espy IV (wife Bee) of Halifax, VA; Courtenay Tew Espy of Savannah (partner Michelle); and Allison Geer Espy (wife Christy) of Duluth, GA and two grandchildren, Carolann and Grant Espy. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Catherine Carrigan of Atlanta and Dr. Richard R. Schulze, Jr. (wife Donna) of Savannah and three grandchildren.

The family would particularly like to thank Hospice Savannah, Darcie Little, Josie Coleman and Betty Jackson for their kind and wonderful support.

The funeral service will be held at historic Christ Church, 28 Bull Street, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Christ Church, Savannah Speech & Hearing Center or to the charity of your choice.
