Mrs. Leaf,

I never had the pleasure of really getting to know you as I am new to this area from Michigan and new to the district. I do fondly remember your warm smile as we passed in the hallways every day and said hello. Reading all the many wonderfull words that others have written about you I am saddened to not have had the remarkable pleasure of getting to know you.

My heart goes out to the family in this most difficult time. Her rewards must be great in Heaven. She is now in a place with no more tears or pain.

Mr. Leaf and Isabelle please let me know if there is anything I can do. May God continue to comfort you and keep His arms wrapped tightly around you.Iam looking forward to meeting you today.

Cathy Leaf was more than my art teacher. She was my friend and confidant. She always encouraged me when I was down. She helped me make all of my work as "fabulous" as it could be. I miss her more than anyone who has ever passed away in my lifetime. South Effingham High School will never be the same. But her spirit still lives on in the hearts and in the minds of all those she touched. She was a mother, wife, daughter, teacher, friend, world traveler, and so much more. She will be greatly missed and no one will ever replace her. She had a rare passion for art of all kinds. Her passion will continue to live on in those that she taught. Her daughter, her students, and all those who were touched by her are her legacy.

Mrs. Leaf was by far one of my favorite teachers in middle school. I remember receiving postcards from her many adventures throughout high school. Mrs. Leaf inspired me and helped to bring out my true passion for writing and design. She will be missed dearly. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

Cathy Jane, my Sistah...
I am honored to have had you as my dearest friend for so long, the best person I have ever known. During our 24 year sisterhood, I have cherished each moment and known that we were having once in a lifetime experiences as they were happening, soaking up every delicious ounce of "fabulousness"! We were very good at living in each and every moment, weren't we? Our trip to the Mediterranean, driving around in your convertible VW Bug at Auburn, hanging out, being roommates, Mr. Resistor, trippy chick, 4-H camp...so many amazing adventures and laughs that will always, always remain etched in my heart. Now it looks like you are finally in your element. I miss you terribly and know at the same time you are flitting around making everything around you Fabulous while looking out for all of us here. You are an inspiration to me and I will make sure that Isabelle knows about the Cathy I've known & loved for so long.
Good bye, Cathy Jane. Godspeed.
I love you. RJ

Where to start?
Mrs.Leaf was an amazing amazing amazing person. There is no doubt in my mind that she has changed the lives of SO MANY students. There wasn't a day that went by during middle and high school that I didn't stop by to say hello to her, even after I was out of her classes. She was uplifting and beautiful with so much excitement to her, she was one of the best teachers I've ever had, always pushing me to better even when I thought I was at my best.
I loved her so much and will miss her always.

Mrs. Leaf was more than just an art teacher. She always helped her students strive to meet their goals and to go above and beyond. I appreciate everything she ever did for me, and how nice she was to me. Mrs. Leaf will be missed and I hope she knows that we all appreciate her outstanding strives to help everyone exceed above and beyond their weaknesses and form greatness and strengths.

Cathy was a dear friend. We go way back to ECMS. I teased her that we we were panthers/mustangs. My classroom was near hers and I always looked foward to talking to her. Her love for her daughter and husband were often topics of our conversations not to mention the Disney princesses.
I can hardly get through this email without the tears blurring my vision. I am consoled by my belief in God and knowing that she is an angel now- no longer in pain looking over her loved ones and painting a mural in heaven.
Her father Mr. Usher hired me and had faith in me as a young teacher. I took a few classes with Cathy and enjoyed her wit and ability to add to class discussions.
Mrs. Usher- fantastic media specilist! I know that you will make sure that Isabelle is read fantastic books.
Your family is in my heart and prayers.

Cathy Leaf was an extradordinary person in all aspects of her life. She was an inspiring teacher, an adoring mother, and an adored wife. She had such an impact on myself as a person in three short years. I've never met anyone that could light up a room with her smiles and stories like she did. She inspired me to become more interested in art, and to see life in a brighter, more optimistic way. To her, life was a "fabulous" work of art. We as students recognized her love for us, her passion for art, and her unconditional love for her family-especially her daughter, the centerpiece for her most famously told stories.
It is absolutely unbelievable the amount of sheer love and appreciation she has from the people she knew.
If she were to say something to us right now, she would say "Thank you for your respect-now go do something fun."

I've had Mrs. Leaf several times since I was in 6th grade. Every year, she has pushed me and criticized my works heavily, giving me the motivation I needed to create beautiful artwork. I will never forget her and the guidance she has given me; as a friend, a mentor. We will all love and miss her always, as her spirit carries on.

Mrs. Leaf was an awesome art teacher. My daughter, Anna, loved the classes she had with her. Anna was very encouraged to continue her work. She has since completed a different type of "art" in hair styling and coloring. I am praying for the family -her personal family and school family- in their tragic loss.

Mrs. Clary Leaf- I still remember when your name changed from Clary to LeaF. You more than inspired me to be a better student and person. though i was horrible at art in your class, and not the best yearbooker for 3 years i entered your classroom and loved every minute. My prayers are with your husband and daughter. You were an amazing person. Middle school seems so long ago, but i still remember different lessons from your teachings. and i have even used much of it in life to date. It deeply saddens me to hear of this passing.

I was blessed enough to have (who I knew as) Ms. Clary when I was in 6th grade @ ECMS. I always looked up to her & even to this day remember her as being my favorite teacher who made such an impact on my life. My Papa Scott died the year I had her. He was the first person who passed on in my family when I was old enough to know what was going on. Ms. Clary & the Exley family knew my Papa Scott from church & when I returned to school I remember Ms. Clary telling me that it was ok to be sad, ok to cry & be upset. Now looking back on that I realize that she knew how hard it was for an 11-12 year old trying to show no emotions for the fear of looking silly in front of peers. How that touched my life & something I will carry on with me.
Last time I saw her we both were with our daughters at YMCA swimming lessons. All I could think it how strange here I was 13 years later from being a student in Ms. Clary’s class to our daughters in the same class together.
Our condolences go to all of Cathy’s family.

And Mrs. Betty,
The Scott family will keep you in our thoughts & prayers.

I am so sorry for your loss. She will be missed. It meant so much to me for her to attend my big "40" party. It seemed just like old times. I feel we have lost an exciting and wonderful young woman...a friend. The only offering I have in this time of trial are my prayers. I know it will be hard for you but you will have her legacy in Isabelle. Please take care and know I will be thinking of you always.

To the family of Cathy,
I met Cathy not long ago while we were taking a class together. She was so smart and insightful and had a genuine love for learning. She spoke with passion about her students and she was always searching for ways to help them achieve their best lives.
She spoke with such tenderness, love and wonder at the impact her daughter and husband had on her life.
She was kind, sharing and always had a ready smile and laugh. She will be missed. My heart felt sympathies.

Mrs. Leaf was my art teacher my freshman year in high school. I was so scared of high school, and then I walked into her room and all the fear I had went away. She helped me find things in myself I didn't know that I could do, or was ever capable of doing. In the short three months that I had her she inspired me so much and has affected me in such a big way. You can walk into the art room at SEHS and tell that there is a huge piece of the imaginary puzzle that keeps the art "family" together missing. In my opinion Mrs. Leaf was a fabulous person, as she always described many things. She will desperately be missed here in the art community.

The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)
I had not seen Cathy in many years, but I remember her fondly. I met her when I first came to Effingham and Mr. Cecil hired me as a teacher. I remember her beautiful art and how passionate she was about it. I was so sad to hear she had passed away, and at the same time, I know she is now free of pain. I hope the family will find strength in Gods abundant love.

Betty,Susan,Allen,Harry, Isabelle & all of Cathy's extended family, How blessed we all were to have a friend like Cathy! I am so sorry for your loss but rejoice in knowing she has gone ahead of us and will be waiting for you at the gate. What a joyous reunion that will be. She was concerned about Isabelle not remembering her because she did not remember her dad, well, she is now with her dad, how wonderful. She is getting to know him in such a wonderful place. Isabelle will not be allowed to forget, I know this. My heart is sad and I am crying, but that is for our separation, it helps to remember this is just a separation for what will be a short time in the scheme of things. She is not gone, just away for a time. We will be going to join her and will rejoice together with our Lord. Betty, I love you more than you can know, you are the most precious person I have ever be blessed to know. Susan, keep her alive for Isabelle and Allen, my prayers are with you in your fight, be strong and know God is with you. Love Lynette

mrs. leaf was my art teacher, eating buddy, and one of my best friends. she was one of those rare people who could understand every kid. i felt as if she once went through some of the things i was going through when she was my teacher just because she understood me so well. its hard to accept the fact that someone you love is now gone. even though i know she is is in a better place i cant help but to be selfish and want her back her with me. she understood and brought out the tinyest aspects in people esp. me! she will always be remembered. she taught me everything i know about art and seeing things from different views. she was the only art teacher ive ever had and i know her work will move throughout all of her students..to all of her students keep doing now what she wanted us to do in every art class..keep drawling, keep painting. to all her students what did she say the reason was for not having an eraser at the end of our drwling pencils?.its because we dont ever need to erase any lines.ours lives are just like a drawling..we dont erase any lines that weve put on our paper becuase every line is important..everything happens for a reason..even if we dont like how it looks then at the end of our drawling it always turns out better than what we could have imagined..well see her again on day..no doubt..and until that day i will look to the sunrise and sunset for her art to shine through me!

Mrs. Leaf was one of the strongest people that i have ever had the experience to meet. even while facing the most horrible of circumstances that could be imagined... she stayed strong for her self, her husband, and their daughter. She will be forever remembered as a wife, a mother, and the teacher who never gave up.

I first met Cathy in an Art class together. She was so postive and the light shown through her face and eyes. I also later had the priviledge of working with her at the annex and at SEMS. Cathy was a very postive, glass always 3/4's full not just 1/2 type of person. She was very sure in her faith and is at home with our Lord. My prayers are with you Harry, Isabella, Betty and the rest of the family and friends.

Isabelle,

I never got to meet you but heard many stories about you from your mom. Like how you and her watched pee wee's playhouse all the time and many other stories. I still remember the stories she told me from when she was a student, and her travels around the world. Mrs. Leaf was more than a teacher to me she was a mentor, a role model, and a counselor for me when I needed help with anything. She loved her husband, daughters, and her family very much. I was lucky enough to have her as a teacher in middle school and my last year of high school in 2005. She was by far one of the best teachers you could ever hope to have. She taught me so many things that i never would have even thought to try. She helped me realize that I did have talent and a passion for art. I still have every piece of work I did in her class and will keep it forever. And even when I thought i couldn't accomplish something she was always there to offer words of wisdom and guide me. She will always be in my heart and mind. And will be a role model for me always. Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss. But She is in a much better place. And we will see her again. God Bless.

Mrs. Leaf was my art teacher and Yearbook Staff advisor when I was in 8th grade at South Effingham Middle School. She was witty, thoughtful, funny, and amazingly talented. I will always remember her allowing us to sneak into the teacher's lounge for afternoon Dr. Peppers and kitkats. She was pregnant shortly after she taught me and I knew she would be an amazing mother! I want her family to know how many people's lives she touched and changed. I am sending my deepest condolences and sympathies for your great loss.

I was so shocked to hear about Cathy. I have her on my prayer list here in Charlotte. I just cannot imagine that she is not here with us anymore. However, she will always be here in our hearts. Please know God is with you and your family and will help you through this time of trial. She has a legacy that you can cheirsh in Isabelle. Again, I am truly sorry for your loss.

My experience of Cathy was that she treasured every ounce of goodness in life. In addition, she had an uncanny knack of recognizing and appreciating the unique and special pieces of others--especially when they were unable to see it in themselves. Even in the moments when she was teaching us about what was important in life, I always loved how she would close her letters by encouraging us to "go do something fun." Thank you, Cathy. You were marvelous.

To Mr. Harry, Isabelle, and Family,

I had the distinguished honor of meeting Mrs. Leaf at SEMS as my teacher for Art class and also as my advisor for year book staff. Mrs. Leaf has blessed my life in countless ways. From the moment I met her she had a smile on her face that could brighten any bad situation. She was someone I could ALWAYS go to when I needed to talk. She was truly a shoulder for me to lean on. After I graduated from high school, I kept in touch with her constantly. We talked a lot about the love of her life, Mr. Harry and her Pride and Joy, Isabelle. There was never a time that I ended a conversation with her that she would not encourage me in some way. She told me recently that I would go on to accomplish everything I wanted in life. Mrs. Leaf cared. She prized every student she taught and she knew her friends and she kept them close. She gave so much of herself to others and she touched so many lives.

Today she is turning over a new leaf. There will be no more suffering for her. We all will miss her, but she has fulfilled her purpose here on this earth. Her memories now must give all of us the courage and the strength to move forward. She will never die simply because memories never die.

To All of Cathy's Family:
I went to school with Cathy at Groves, but have not seen her in quite some time. However, I've been kept up to date about her illness by Tina Crapse, a close co-worker of Cathy's. My heart aches for you. I read an e-mail that Cathy wrote a little while back. I so admire her faith and strength! Her love of God, her family and friends was, to say the least, outstanding. There is NO DOUBT that she made a huge positive impact on so many lives. God be with all of you as you face the time ahead. Remember...HE will carry you!

Mrs. Betty and Cathy’s family,

We join in mourning the loss of Cathy. I remember from our first days of working together at ECMS the glint that always was in her eye. She always saw what was good in students and in each of us, even when we couldn’t. She was a gift to this school district; we and the students who shared her professional life are blessed by her teaching here.

Our prayers continue in this difficult time.

My heart aches for the loss of a great friend and collegue. I will never forget our years as fellow art teachers for ECMS. Her love of life and beauty was infectious. Her quick wit and strength will forever be an inspiration for all who knew her. While I am sad for myself and her wonderful family, I am reminded that " To Die Is Gain ". I am thinking what a joyful reunion day she is having with her Lord, her Dad, and Mr. Cecil, and in a short breath, all who are in Christ will see her again. May God strengthen and sustain us all until that day.

My prayers are with the Leaf family and all of her dear friends.I was fortunate to have worked with Cathy at SEMS and have remained friends since she moved to SEHS. She was a thoughtful and very considerate person. I will sadly miss her and her smile. Cathy made my life much nicer by being a part of it. She is with God now and we will meet again one day.

It seems like only yesterday when we sat with Cathy at her baby shower for Isabelle. She was glowing with joy at the gift of life she was carrying. The influence of Cathy's life will carry us as we think of her gifts and talent she shared with us. I pray God's comfort in ways only He can provide for her family and friends, now and in the days to come.

Betty,
My heart is heavy for you and yours. I can't begin to know what you are feeling but know that you are a strong woman of God and a wonderful mother to your children. My thoughts go back to a time when Cathy & Michelle played in the "playpen" in my office at the church. I hold you all close to my heart.

I remember her as Miss Clary from the 6th grade annex. I am 28 now, and that tells you how much of an impression she left on me from way back then! She was a great teacher, not just in arts, but gave me confidence that I still carry with me. It's a shame that I couldn't have told her this prior to her passing. I didn't even know she was ill. My heart goes out to her family & friends. May God bless you in this time of need.

My thought and prayers are with your family. I was the sub for Cathy when she had Isabelle and I worked with her at the High School. We are all truly blessed to have had Cathy in our lives. The only thing that makes it easier is to know she is in a much better place.

I'm very sorry to hear about this great loss. I was a student of Mrs. Leaf's several years ago, having her for art and yearbook staff. She was a wonderful woman and very fun to be around. I will always have great memories of her and will also keep all of you in my prayers.

The pain of losing a child has to be sooo hard. I am so sorry. Cathy accomplished great things in her short life - she made differences in children's lives.
Una asked for prayer for Cathy in our SS class.
It seems only a little while ago in my memory that James died.
Again I am so sorry for your loss.

My son, William, had the privilege of having Mrs. Leaf as his art teacher at the beginning of this year. He was very sad to hear of her illness and missed her a great deal once she left school. William has talked of her a great deal since finding out about her passing. Mrs. Leaf made his art experience very positive and helped foster his creativity. I am very sorry for your loss. I know that she will be greatly missed!

Our deepest heartfelt sympathy to Cathy's family from a former student and her mother. Cathy was a teacher who lives on in each of her students for she gave them her love of beauty and life. We were all blessed to have Cathy's special spirit touch our lives. God's Comfort for all who love her.

Dear Ms Betty & Family,
My heart is so heavy with grief for all of you. You have all been through so much in such a short time. And through it all your faith has remained so strong. I have been keeping up with you through my parents and they have told me, as have my sisters, what a remarkable inspiration you are to everyone through your strong faith in God. I admire you so much! Although we know that Cathy is free of pain and in a better place, I know that this has to be the hardest thing you have ever faced. I can not imagine ever losing a child. Please know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of many. Hold tight to your memories and your strong faith. We all love you!
