David Postle Obituary

David Edward "Dave" Postle, resident of Wilmington Island, Georgia, formerly of Tybee Island, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at Azalealand Nursing Home at the age of 79 years.

Dave was born October 18, 1938, in Quincy, Illinois. He graduated in 1957 from the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired in Jacksonville, Illinois, where he excelled in wrestling and track. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts from Quincy College in 1961, and earned his Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from The Illinois Institute of Technology of Chicago in 1973.

Dave was employed for over 30 years by the State of Illinois, Department of Rehabilitation Services, as a Rehabilitation Counselor for Blind and Visually Impaired in Rockford and Springfield. He was honored to receive the Rehabilitation Counselor of the Year from the Illinois Rehabilitation Association in 1973. He was an administrator at the Illinois Visually Handicapped Institute in Chicago from 1984-1987. He served on the board of the Illinois Council of the Blind and was a member of the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired Advisory Council.

After retirement Dave was a volunteer legislative lobbyist at the State Legislature in Illinois, working tirelessly to improve services for the blind and visually impaired. Upon moving to Tybee Island, he was a partner in a small business and served on the Tybee Island Planning Commission. Dave and his wife Sandi were also founding members of the organization, Forever Tybee.

Dave was proud of his Cherokee heritage. A dapper dresser, Dave often displayed his love of the American West by wearing a belt buckle with an American-Indian theme, a bolo tie, and a 10-gallon hat. Dave also liked to ride horses and participated in the Heroes on Horseback program in Pritchardville, South Carolina, for several years. He enjoyed animals, including working with his Guide Dog, Acme. Dave was perhaps best known as a life-long lover of music of all kinds, and he maintained an extensive collection of vinyl records, tapes, and CDs. Dave was also an avid reader and a talented carpenter who used his carpentry skills to enhance his home and yard.

Dave was predeceased by his twin brother, Daniel William Postle of Quincy, Illinois; his son, Robert Earl Postle of Rockford, Illinois; his father, William Howard Postle; step-mother, Helen Postle; mother, Opal Marie Hughes; and step-father, Earl Hughes; all of Quincy, Illinois.

Dave will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Sandi of Wilmington Island, Georgia; daughter Kelly (Frank) Powers, of Davis, Illinois; son Ken (Bridget) Postle of Rockford, Illinois; grandchildren Aaron Postle, Mike Intravaia (Jessica), and Rosie Cantu (John), all of Rockford, Illinois; a sister Linda Little (Garry Hively) of Quincy, Illinois; and a sister-in-law, Kathleen Postle, of Quincy, Illinois. He is also survived by his half-brother, William Postle (Bernedette) of Quincy, Illinois; two half-sisters: Janice Browning (Sandy) of Knox City, Missouri; and Suzanne Parker of Durango, Colorado; several step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 51 Wilmington Island Road, at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 14, 2018. The memorial service will be followed by lunch at The North Beach Grill on Tybee Island, GA.

Memorial donations may be made to: Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, 658 E. State St., Jacksonville, IL, 62650 ATTN: Business Office, Out of State Travel Fund or Tybee Church, P.O. Box 1511, Tybee Island, GA 31328 or online at https://www.gofundme.com/tybeechurch

Dave was a customer at the record store I worked at. It was always a fun time when he and Acme would come in to shop. Dave was a great guy and will be missed.
