Dear Carol and Family,
I would like to extende my deepest sympothy for your loss. LTC Norton was my very first Commander where I served at Fort Ord from 1985-1988. I will always remember him and the times we had in that unit. I am still serving to this day proudly. Again best wishes to you and your family.

Dear Carol & Lee,
Upon reporting to 7th ID, there was a large sign entering the Post.... it said something about "Light Fighters".... in my absence from the military since Vietnam, I honestly thought that referred to saving energy .... turn out the lights (I can still see the half smile, and outright laugh on COL Norton's face when he heard this). I was offered a real world position in the "Buffalo Battalion"... largely to the leadership and larger-than-life commander, LTC Frank Norton. My time there was without equal in my military career. My Reserve time was extended quite a bit.... and I looked forward everyday to working with "Boss Buffalo" and all the officers and men in this rich in tradition unit. I pass a restaurant almost daily called the "Buffalo" here in Colombia, and remember my days in those old, drafty wooden buildings, that I wouldn't change for anything. Many individuals have the title "Commander", but not all are truly that, A COMMANDER. COL Norton was a Commander in every sense of the word. Please accept my deepest sympathy....

Carol, I was deeply saddened when I got the word of Frank passing,he and I were friends in Waycross attending both grammar & high school together and always paling around.Frank was my best man in Carolyn & my wedding in '65. We were in St. Simons memorial day visiting my niece and called Frank but evidently you and Frank were out of town, wanted to see my friend of 60 years. I have had him on my mind ever since I received the call. Carol you are on in our prayers and Frank is in a joyful heaven with his Lord. May peace be with you.

I'll never forget the morning I said to Uncle Frank, "I don't believe in the military". He didn't say a word. He just looked at me, with infinite patience and understanding in his eyes. That look changed the course of a 15 year old kid toward greater maturity and responsibility. I regard Uncle Frank as a father, because of the influence he had on me by trying to follow his example. I regret not being able to tell him this. I can only show you, Aunt Carol and Cousin Lee, his leadership in family is equal or greater to his leadership in everything else.

Carol,
Please accept the Harners deepest sympathy for your loss. His smile, laugh, style and leadership were truly one of a kind. We were so blessed to have him in our lives at Fort Ord as our commander and friend. He was always right there for all of us when needed. I will never forget that he was the first to welcome my son into the world early one morning with a "Hello Billy, Uncle Frank is here." Frank will be greatly missed because of his big and loving heart that made a huge difference for so many. May God bless you.

Condolences from Maine. LTC Norton left the 4/17IN(L) about the time my COHORT joined the BN. His influence and impact was always apparent though, through my leaders' recollections and fond memories of him. He was clearly a very mighty Infantryman and a leader earning the highest respect from his soldiers. And that's more than what most men will ever be. Our sympathies for your loss.

Carol and Lee, it is with sadness that I write. Meeting Frank was such a delite and of course you and Lee as well. We only knew of each other for a short week, and yet we felt we were friends for years. Frank was a walking historian, he made everything come to life, as if you were actually seeing things at the time it was happening. He loved his family, Saint Simons, and his country. May God give you strength through this. Frank will be trully missed.

Carol and Lee,
As you know from our conversation today, Carol, Frank's passing at such a young age has taken many of us by surprise. His vitality, liveliness, and stalwartness up until the moment he left us have caught us all off guard. Ever will he be remembered for our ever too brief time while in we were all in Washington, DC.
Lee, your presence will ever remind us of your beloved father. He was truly one of a kind.
On or before the 13th of July, please expect a special commemorative token of esteem and caring from our family to yours.

Dear Carol and Lee,
It is with great saddnes as I write this note of condolence. Your husband and father was a man of the highest caliber. I had the good fortune to serve under his command during my service in the Army. His magnanimous presence and dedication as a leader made him an exceptional commander. I owe him an amazing amount of gratitude for the impact he made in my life and feel comfortable saying that is true for so many who had the chance to both know and serve with him. Lauren and I will continue to keep the both of you in our prayers. Heaven holds a special place for Colonel Norton a man who faithfully served his God, his family and without fail, his country. May God bless you and keep you.

Frank was an humble friend to everyone at Oxford. His constant smiling and laughter drew people to him. Everyone wanted to be liked by Frank and everyone on campus knew him. He will be missed by those of us who hadn't seen nor heard from him since 1963.
My first attempt to add a comment appeared to fail. If it didn't please excuse the redundancy.

The LTC was a "Soldier " and knew how to take care of soldiers. I spent 20 years and 5 minutes in the Light Infantry and LTC Norton was one of the best commanders that I ever had.He had this ability that nothing was impossible and that things would work out. I could NOT have served under a better commander. If there is a " BUFFALO HEAVEN " then Frank is seated at the head table. To his family I say " BUFFALO SIR".

Dear Carol and Lee,
Through good-old "EAO" networking I received the shocking news of Frank's untimely death.
Please accept sincerest condolences from Betty and me.
It must have been "the spirit world" that inspired me, just yesterday afternoon, July 4, to replay the videotapes of the choral reunion in April 2002. The final piece of music was accompanied by a brass trio of big Emory students.
it was Frank who generously paid for that. I was thinking of emailing Ashley Calhoun about that reliving experi-ence, and this morning he relayed the sad news.
I remember you both so well from 1962-63, that final year at Oxford for me. And of course I recall our Georgia-Alabama-Florida tour that spring. Never again would I be privileged to have a dual appointment, bridging choral music and professional history.
When I spoke to Frank, too briefly, seven years ago, I sensed that he was both the same grinning guy, and also enormously changed because of his Vietnam experience.
In an ideal world I would have pried into his psyche, so I could hear his life-story and the evolution of his "Waycross values" through the vicissitudes of a busy and productive life.
What a sterling man he was.

I do not have the words to adequately express the feeling that I have on hearing about the sudden loss of such a wonderful person.
There are so many memories connected to Frank during and after my service in the congress.
When I heard of his passing so many of these memories came rushing back to me.
Carol, Luella and I want you to know how much we have treasured our friendship with both of you.
May God hold you and Lee in his loving, tender hands and comfort you during this most difficult time.

All who knew Frank Norton enjoyed his stories and knowledge that made us all laugh and make it through difficult times and major challenges. Frank was one of the brightest and most passionate people I ever met. We learned from him every time we dealt with him. He was the perfect person to talk to whenever we felt that we could not accomplish our goals. He would never back down. Whenever I thought we would not get past another day's challenges, I would always say that Colonel Frank will get us through it. We are better people because of Frank and he will continue to lead us.

Carol and Lee, Zoe and I are shocked and saddened to hear of Frank's passing. I was a year ahead of Frank at Emory At Oxford, as it was known right after the Civil War when we were students there, and was his Big Brother in Sigma Chi on the Atlanta campus. I will remember him for many things-his ever-present good humor, his hearty and cheering laugh, his genuine hospitality, but most of all for his service to and love for our country. May his memory be honored for bearing American arms in harm's way so that we might remain free. Please know that we are praying for the comfort of each heart that grieves this enormous loss, espcially the hearts of Carol and Lee. We rejoice that the separation is temporary. Lord willing, I will see you both at the visitation and service.

The world is a sadder place today with the loss of a truly great person. Frank Norton was an important colleague, but also a great friend. I will always remember “the Colonel” with fondness and a smile. I learned a great deal from him, probably more than he realized. Frank’s insights on Washington were always instructive and well reasoned, but the greater lessons were gained by simply being around him. Frank was exceptionally talented, intelligent and driven, a natural leader, but balanced his confidence with a charm and self-deprecating humor that added to his genuineness. Frank was someone who could instantly lift the spirits of those around him with his wonderful sense of humor. As much fun the Colonel was to be around, there was never any doubt that he was also a person you could count on in an a pinch. Frank will always live in my heart and mind as a truly special individual. The true measure of a man is the impact he had on those around him…I am a far better person for having known Frank Norton.

With great sadness and love I recollect many fond memories of Frank. I'll never forget trying to figure out why he and Dad were digging a huge hole in our back yard in Springfield-my first spiece braten. Dear Carol & Lee,
Over the years I have come to cherish the friendship that I shared with your entire family. Frank's impact on my life was very profound. Every memory is one that I hope I never forget. I am grateful for the opprotunity to have gotten to spend time with you and Lee. Please know that my prayers and thoughts are with you during the difficult days ahead. I am only a phone call away, if there is anything that I can do to help. Remember that one of his favorite sayings was "I am living the good life" and know that he is "living the good life" now.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
