George Cotter Obituary

George Louis Cotter, Jr., 73, passed away June 19, 2005 after a valiant bout with pancreatic cancer. Born on May 29, 1932, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, George's family moved to Winnetka, Illinois, where he became involved with the Boy Scouts, eventually earning the rank of Eagle. George graduated from Wilkinsburg High School in June of 1950 and received his BSE (ME) from the University of Michigan in 1954. In college George was very active in his social fraternity, Alpha Delta Phi, and in the honorary fraternities of Phi Eta Sigma, Pi Tau Sigma, and Tau Beta Pi. After earning his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1956, George began his working life at Eaton Corporation. During his 32-year tenure with Eaton he served as General Manager of the Heater/Climate Control, Axle, and Axle and Brake Divisions. In 1989 George shifted his career to MTD Products, Inc., where he retired as a member of the Board of Directors, Executive Vice-President Cor porate, and President of the Automotive Industrial Plastics Divisions. After George retired, Lois and he moved to the Landings on Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia, where they built their third home. There they found many friends and activities that suited their lifestyle. George enjoyed golfing and playing bridge and was an active member of the Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Lois Dyer Cotter, and the three wonderful children with whom he was blessed--Patricia Cotter Wilson of Shelbyville, Kentucky, Diane Beth Cotter of Indianapolis, Indiana, and George Louis Cotter III of Santa Ana, California. George is also survived by his grandchildren, Kevin Hayes Wilson and Lauren Beth Wilson of Shelbyville, Kentucky. Memorial Service: 2:00 pm, Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Dr. John Wall officiating. A reception will follow in Liston Hall. I shall always remember George Cotter as a man who listened to what you were saying and then advised you on what he felt was better. His advise was always constructive and he was knowledgeable in many fields. A true man for all seasons. May his family be comforted by our Lord in the time of loss.
