Janet Meshew Obituary

Janet Meshew - KEY WEST, FL - Janet Carolyn Spiecker Meshew died April 4th, 2011 in her beloved Key West, Florida. She went peacefully at home with her daughter and a son at her side. Mama was born August 16, 1930 in Chicago Illinois to William and Myrtle Spiecker. She graduated in 1951 from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Cairo, Illinois. During nursing school, she met Jean Pierre Meshew (1927-1996) and they were married soon after her graduation. She led a varied and interesting life. As a young woman, she rode Tennessee Walking horses competitively and won many trophies and ribbons on her mare Linda. She was an artist, a writer, and a political activist who marched for civil rights in the sixties and regularly wrote to her congressman and the White House. After many years of nursing she tried various other occupations including driving a taxi and cooking on a shrimp boat. She will be sadly missed by her sister Louise Berger of Kansas; sons George (Joanne) of Lancaster, PA, Jed (Lee) of Savannah, and Josh (David Ford) of Dallas, TX; daughter Amy (Will Soto) of Key West, FL; grandchildren Jamie, Jeddy, Jordan and Katie; as well as several nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by a son, John Philip Meshew (1953-1968). Services were private.
