Joseph Sledge, Jr. died on December 1, 2020 at 76 years old after having only five years of freedom following his 37 years of wrongful incarceration by the State of North Carolina. Joseph was born in Ocilla, Georgia on June 17, 1944, but moved to Savannah shortly after his birth. He graduated from Savannah's Alfred Ely Beech High School in 1964 and had fond memories of his time there.
Joseph Sledge, Jr. is survived by siblings Edward Sledge, Oscar Sledge, and Barbara Kinlaw; nephews Rico, Sean, Maurice, Anthony, and Kiwanee; and niece Nakisha. He will be laid to rest on Monday, December 21, 2020 at 1 p.m. at the Ocilla City Cemetery where his parents and grandparents are buried. May he always rest in peace and freedom.

I am the jailhouse attorney that evaluated JS's case at one of the prisons where I met him. He approached me complaining that no one would believe his story of not being guilty. looked into him case and found his allegations to be true. I put together the petition that eventually made its way ti the innocence project people. Sorry to hear passed away. I served 28 years and was glad to have met and helped Joseph.

To family of Mr Sledge, i grew up in savannah but live in gastonia nc. i occasionally read the obits in the savannah paper. i am very sorry to hear of the passing of your brother (i am 74) and i am deeply troubled to learn of his prolonged wrongful incarnation. i am at a loss for words regarding this. i pray for your family Philip l Hinely
