Julian Moreno Obituary

Julian W. Moreno, Sr. - TALAHI ISLAND - Julian was born in Savannah on July 8th, 1923, to Julian A. Moreno and Margaret Lucree Moreno. He passed away November 14th, 2012. He was predeceased by his daughter, Nancy Jean Moreno, at the age of 19, and his wife of 48 years, Beatrice Sires Moreno. He is survived by his sons, Julian W. Jay Moreno, Jr, of St. Marys, GA, and Michael A. Moreno, of Savannah. He is also survived by his friend of 16 years, Mary Dubose. Mr. Moreno was a Golden Gloves boxer and a major in Army JROTC at Savannah High in 1941 when the U.S. entered WWII. He left high school almost immediately to enlist in the U.S. Army. Serving as a 30 caliber water-cooled machine- gunner with General Patton's Third Army, he landed with the first troops ashore in Morrocco (Operation Torch) in November of 1942. He fought continually through the North Africa campaign until Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's vaunted Afrika Corps was defeated. He then participated in the invasion of Sicily in July of 1943. On mainland Italy, during the First Battle of Monte Cassino in January of 1944, he was wounded by a German screaming mimi rocket. He was thereafter evacuated back to the U.S. and honorably discharged after 6 months of recuperation at an Army facility in Miami. Mr. Moreno then returned to Savannah High to graduate in 1945. In 1946, he married Beatrice Elizabeth Sires of Savannah. He and bride Bea soon moved to Macon where Mr. Moreno used the G.I. Bill to attend an 18 month school to become a technician in the then new field of air conditioning. He was initiated into the Local Union 188, Plumbers, Pipefitters, and HVAC Journeymen and Apprentices in 1951 where he was a life member, retiring as a Refrigeration Journeyman. He was a charter member of American Legion, Post No. 36. At Mr. Moreno's request, there was no visitation, no funeral mass, and no prior announcement. Those wishing to make memorial donations are requested to make them to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Michael A. Moreno is asked to ask him to call his brother in St. Marys.
