Leo Van Exley Obituary

Leo Van Exley,75, of Savannah, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004 at his residence under the care of Family and Hospice. A native Savannahian, he graduated from Savannah High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served with the 533rd Engineer Aerial Repro Company in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He also had an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy having served in the Naval Reserves. On his return home, he attended Armstrong Junior College and worked through the years for the U.S. Corp of Engineers, the Engineering Dept., at Union Bag, and Dan E. Sewell Engineering Firm. In 1978 he was licensed by the State of Georgia as a land surveyor and was a principal in Barrett & Exley Land Surveying, Inc. In 1979, Mr. Exley became the owner of Exley Surveyors, Inc., and served as President until he retired in 2000 due to illness. Leo was a 50 year member of American Legion Post # 135, and an Emeritus member of the Surveying and Mapping Society of Georgia. He also se rved as Scout Master and other positions in the Boy Scouts of America in the 1970's. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo S. and Myrtle G. Exley of Savannah, and his sister, Joyce Exley Frost of Savannah. Leo leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 50 years, Mae Jon Exley; two sons and a daughter in law, Ben & Janice Exley of Mandeville, La., and Steven V. Exley of Savannah; three grandchildren, Jason, Jill, and Jennifer Exley of Mandeville, La; nieces and nephews, Lynn, Gene & Jacquelyn Wilson of Brunswick, Ga., Nancy, Robert, Andrew & Austin Gearhart of Pooler, Ga; aunts and an uncle, Hortense Exley and Katie Swain of Savannah, Walter & Edith Exley of Turtle Town, Tn., Norma Gale, of Tybee Island; and many cousins and friends. Mr. Exley donated his body to the Medical College of Georgia. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Saturday October 9th at the Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home. Memorial Service following at 3:00 pm Saturday in the Chapel of Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home with Dr. Wayne E. Moseley, officiating.
