Michael Thomas Powers - TYBEE ISLAND - Michael Thomas Powers, of Tybee Island Georgia, died August 24, 2015, at Memorial University Medical Center after a long illness. Michael was born on January 10, 1951, in Heidelberg, Germany. He graduated from St. Michael's School, and was a proud member of the Benedictine Class of 1969, and the University of Notre Dame Class of 1973. He was a member of the Notre Dame Club of Greater Savannah, the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Sinn Fein Society. He worked for more than 20 years as a checker for the International Longshoreman's Clerks and Checkers Union, until his illness forced his retirement in 2010. Michael was predeceased by his father, John Joseph Powers; and is survived by his mother, Marilyn Powers of Tybee Island; his brother John Powers of Savannah; his sisters - Therese Powers of Savannah; Patrice Powers of Chicago, Illinois; and Kathleen Powers Mayers of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; his nephews -- Joshua Powers of Fairfax, Virginia, Zachary Powers of Savannah, and Logan Sevier (Stephanie) of Richmond Hill, Georgia; and his nieces -- Emma, Caroline, and Honora Mayers of Hilton Head, and Baleigh Sevier of Richmond Hill; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. A devout Catholic who cherished his faith, Michael was a member of St. Peter the Apostle parish. He loved his family, his friends, all things Irish, and the ocean at Tybee. Prior to his illness, he could be found supporting his nephews and nieces at every school function, science fair, recital, and sporting event; or combing the sand at Tybee in search of the perfect shark's tooth.
