Nita Williams Obituary

Nita Donehoo Morgan Williams - SAVANNAH - Nita Donehoo Morgan Williams, wife, mother, volunteer and civic activist died on November 18, 2008 at her home at 210 East Liberty Street, Savannah, Georgia after a courageous and fierce battle with acute myelogeous leukemia. Nita will be remembered for her beauty, elegance, genteel Southern charm, her kind and generous spirit and loyalty to family, friends and causes she supported. Nita was the daughter of the late William Jason Morgan and Nita Donehoo and wife for more than fifty-one years of Savannah attorney, E. Pomeroy Williams. She was educated at The Pape School in Savannah, and Mount Vernon Seminary, Washington, D.C., Mount Vernon College, Washington, D.C. and The University of Georgia. Nita was a current or former member of numerous civic, social and hereditary organizations including The Junior League of Savannah, The Little Theatre, The Women's Board of Bethesda, The Trustee's Garden Club, The Married Women's Card Club and The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the State of Georgia. Nita was a member of St. John's Church in Savannah and a staunch Anglican. Nita served on the City of Savannah Drain Committee with now City Councilman Larry E. Stuber in the 1980's which was instrumental in bringing about better drainage solutions for the low lying areas of Savannah. She formed the Liberty Street Property Owner's Association when the Georgia Department of Transportation threatened to obliterate the park median in Liberty Street and make it a thoroughfare and filed suit against the DOT in the United States District Court successfully saving the historic street from desecration. Her slogan "Give me Liberty as a Street and not as a Highway" is still a watchword. Nita loved her native City and was a proponent and supporter of historic preservation and zoning. She led or prominently participated in actions to require the City of Savannah to enforce its zoning ordinances to prevent commercial development in residential neighborhoods in Savannah's Historic District. She frequently appeared at meetings of the Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission in support of causes to preserve Savannah's historic buildings structures and sites. Nita's varied interests included reading, gardening and traveling all of which she pursued with characteristic enthusiasm. In addition to her husband Nita is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Edgar Pomeroy Williams, Jr. (Leigh) and George Morgan Williams (Kristin), all of Charleston, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Katherine Donehoo Williams, Edgar Pomeroy Williams III and John F. Williams, all of Atlanta, Georgia; her brother Dr. William Jason Morgan and her niece Dr. Michelle Morgan, both of Cambridge, Massachusetts; her nephew, Dr. Jason Phipps-Morgan, of Ithaca, New York; and her Morgan and Foy family cousins. Funeral Service: 12:00 p.m., Thursday, November 20, 2008 at St. John's Church. Burial: Bonaventure Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be, E. Brian Culver, Edward S. Dillon, Joseph E.
