Rebecca Mulligan Obituary

Miss Rebecca Mulligan - MAYODAN, NC - Miss Rebecca Mulligan, 90, died Sunday, July 07, 2013, at Friends Home - Guilford College in Greensboro, NC. She was born November 26, 1922, in Glennville, GA, to the late Edward Franklin Mulligan and Laura Rogers Mulligan and was educated in the Glennville, GA, public schools, where she was valedictorian of her 1939 high school class. She graduated from Georgia State College for Women, now Georgia College and State University, in Milledgeville, GA, where she majored in Business/Education and was a member of the Phoenix Society, an Academic Honors organization. She also did graduate work at Appalachian State University. In 1945/46, she worked for a CPA firm in Savannah, GA, and later taught Business/Education in Brunswick, GA, High Point, and Stoneville, NC, High Schools. One of her favorite activities in later years was attending the class reunions of Stoneville High. For two years Rebecca worked in the office of the School Superintendent of Rockingham County, NC. From 1955 to 1975, Rebecca worked for the TC Stone Insurance Agency in Stoneville, NC, and then from 1975 to 1984, served as a secretary for the town of Mayodan, NC. After retirement Rebecca monitored closely all Mayodan City Council meetings, and in 1989 she ran for Mayor of Mayodan as a write-in candidate, garnering wide support. The Associated Press ran a picture of her campaigning for Mayor which was picked up nationally. She supported the candidacy of numerous Democrats in state and national elections. Rebecca was an active member of the Mayodan Methodist Church, and she volunteered for the Youth for Truth Organization started by a family friend, Winkie Willis, to provide after-school/evening activities for the young people of Mayodan. She established an endowed scholarship in memory of Winkie Willis at the Rockingham Community College and also established the Mulligan Sisters' Scholarship at Georgia College. Aunt Becky was most proud of her work to reestablish the Alcoholic Anonymous program in Mayodan where she volunteered in many capacities. She said her phone was a help line for others. Her last years were spent in the caring hands of the Friends Home at Guilford in Greensboro, NC, where she said every day is a vacation. Rebecca will long be remembered by her family, friends, neighbors and community as one who was always there in times of need. Rebecca was predeceased by her sister, Julia Turner and brother-in-law Aaron Turner of Mayodan, NC; her brother Munsey Mulligan of Winter Haven, FL; her sister Marjorie Crouch of Winston-Salem, NC; her brother Ed Mulligan of Glennville, GA. She is survived by nieces, Lindy Holloway, of Jesup, GA; Laura Pope of Tifton, GA; Susan Walker of Darien, GA; and nephews Roger Mulligan of Mayodan, NC; Fred Crouch of Washington, DC; Mike Mulligan of Glennville, GA, and by close friends Bruce Martin and Margaret Willis of Mayodan, NC. Her life will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at the Mayodan United Methodist Church, Mayodan, NC, with Reverend Bruce E. Martin and Reverend Charles Penley officiating. A brief visitation will follow in the church. Interment will be held in Mayodan Municipal Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Winkie Willis Scholarship Fund at Rockingham Community College, 215 Wrenn Memorial Road , Wentworth, NC, 27375, or to a charity of your choice. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of the Friends Home at Guilford College and to Bruce Martin for their devoted care of Aunt Becky during her last years.
