Stanley Dean Lindsey - SAVANNAH - Stanley Dean Lindsey, seventy-five, died on Saturday July 12th in Bluffton, South Carolina on his horse farm with his wife. He was born on September 29th, 1938 in Lebanon Tennessee. Dr. Lindsey graduated with a BS degree from the University of Tennessee. He continued his education part time at Vanderbilt University and received his MS degree and Ph.D. in structural engineering. He formed his own structural engineering company, Stanley D. Lindsey and Associates, in Nashville, Tennessee. Over the next twenty years his firm specialized in steel structures and was recognized with awards from AISC for creative and innovative designs. He finished out his career by accepting a position of Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth; four children, Alan, Leigh Anne, Samantha, and Stanley, and eight grandchildren. The memorial service will be held July 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. The family suggests any remembrances in lieu of flowers be made in his memory to Performance Initiatives, PIFitness.org. I often think of my dear cousin. Always called me his baby sister. He was definitely my big brother. When he finished college, his proud first purchase was a Volvo. He was so proud. Years later I called him when I purchased my first Volvo, I think he was as excited as I. The last time I saw him, my husband and I spent a few days with he and Elizabeth. I remember he offered me some living room tables of his mothers, my Aunt that I loved dearly. I would have love to have them but I thought they should go to his children. Hope everyone is doing well.

I just tried to call Stan and found he had passed. I usually tried to touch base with him around the holidays. I was feeling sad that he had not contacted me. Jim and I are in Alpharetta with Julie so I thought I would give him a call and ask him where you had lived here. I'm so sorry for you loss. Please call me when you can. He was always more to me than a cousin. I always considered him my big brother. It breaks my heart that I will never hear that wonderful jolly voice. All of you are in my prayers. Hope to hear from you soon.

Prominent structural engineer and professor Stanley D. Lindsey has been called a genius, an innovator and an inspiration. He died on July 12 of a massive heart attack on his horse farm in Bluffton, S.C. He was 75.
Not long after starting his eponymous firm in Nashville, Tenn., in 1966, Lindsey became known as a pioneer in the use of computers for the analysis and design of structures. Stanley D. Lindsey and Associates Ltd., which for years wrote most of its own software, was one of the first engineers to integrate computer-aided design with drafting.
Lindsey was one of the developers of the "load and resistance factor" design method, introduced in the mid-1980s (ENR 11/9/89 p. 58). His volunteer work with the American Institute of Steel Construction, especially as a former AISC committee chairman on specifications, is still considered an important contribution to engineering. "Stan Lindsey was a gentleman, innovator and leader," says Charlie Carter, AISC's vice president and chief structural engineer. "An eternal optimist, he usually added a trademark smiley face next to his signature, with a squiggle to mimic his curly hair."
Lindsey received a bachelor of science in civil engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1961, as well as a master's degree in 1966 and a doctorate in 1972, both from Vanderbilt University. In 2002, he sold his majority stake in his firm and started a career teaching at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Savannah. "Stan never quit working," says Thomas S. Tarpy Jr., president of Lindsey's former firm, who began working full time at the now 30-person company in 1974. "Three weeks ago, he called me to talk about developing an online simulator for interactive distance learning."

Stan was a man of God and a man that God used in many ways to make things or people better. I last had conversations with Stan about his distance learning projects and wanted so much to put him in touch with Van Andel Science Academy in Grand Rapids Michigan who has broken the code to teach children "how to do science". I will never forget that beaming smile when he heard that term. We will miss him dearly.

I am so sorry to hear of your family's loss. I probably met Stan in the early 80's when his firm was still in Nashville. He built an amazing structural engineering consulting company and when it moved to Atlanta it became one of the preeminent firms in the Southeast.
He was missed when he retired and will be sorely missed now that he has passed.
