William Weichselbaum Obituary

Dr. William W. Weichselbaum, Jr., 95 of Savannah, died Thursday, May 22, 2003 at Savannah Square Community. The Savannah, Georgia native was the son of the late Carrie Kayton Weichselbaum and William W. Weichselbaum a local dentist. Dr. Weichselbaum was the first orthodontist in the Coastal Georgia area starting his practice in the early 1930s. He attended the University of Georgia, Atlanta Southern Dental College (now Emory University Dental School) and Northwestern University where he received his orthodontic training. He was president of the Mickve Israel Brotherhood, Georgia Dental Association, Southern Society of Orthodontics, a founder of the Urban Health Center of Savannah (now Westside Urban Health Center), a president of the Savannah Speech and Hearing Center, a member of Congregation, Mickve Israel, the Harmonie Club, Chatham Club, Savannah Golf Club, Kiwanis Club of Savannah, Chatham County Health Council and other civic organizations. After retiring from the practice of dentistry, Dr. Weichselbaum was an instructor in the dental program of Armstrong College. Dr. Weichselbaum was an accomplished golfer, winner of several tournaments in the southeast and instrumental in establishing the junior golf program in this community. Survivors: his wife, Mildred W. Weichselbaum, a sister and brother-in-law, Dolly W. Diamond and Coleman Diamond, preceded in death by his sister, Alice W. Osterweil, and her husband, Irving Osterweil, brother and sister-in-law, Stanley Harris and Bernice W. Harris; nieces and nephews, Stanley E. Harris, Jr., John W. Osterweil, Donald W. Diamond and Patricia W. Taylor and several grand nieces and nephews. Visitation: 30 Wild Thistle Lane, Savannah, Georgia 31406, after funeral until 6:00 p.m. Graveside Services: 10:00 a.m. Friday, in Bonaventure Cemetery. Dr. W. treated me and many others in the 1950's. He was just wonderful. Going to his office in Brunswick every two weeks was fun for all of us. He was a terrific orthodondist and friend.
