As John Bailey's Commander I have never worked with a finer NCO in my military service. I met John one month before we were scheduled to be deployed to Iraq. I was relieved and comforted knowing that such a dignified Soldier would be on the team. Through out the mission in Iraq, SFC Bailey made himself indispensible through sound reason and superb leadership. I am honored to have served with such a fine NCO and Soldier. On a personal level John was the kind of person that could relate without judgement or prejudice. I remember this remarkable man being an excellent sounding board for decisions both professional and presonal. He will be greatly missed and always remembered.

I had the pleasure of meeting John during our deployment to Iraq. Though I did not really get to know him well, I distinctly remember thinking about what a nice person he was and admired him as such a hard working and knowledgeable NCO. May God bless him and be with his family.

I've known John since 1994 when I came back from test pilot school. I immediatly liked him and learned quickly that I could trust him with my life. We have been friends all along but I have to say my life was too busy to really get to know him. Then when we were all transferred from the 640th to the 1/140th for deployment to Iraq, I was made Platoon Leader and choose him to be my Platoon SGT. I knew it was a good choice professionally but I had no idea how good of a choice it would be for me emotionally. He always had my back, the deployment was one of the most difficult experiences in my life, but John was always there. I'm not sure how many people really know everything that happened in that year, but I have never been under as much stress to perform a job that was not supported or understood from those above, but John was always there. I met more Generals, Colonels, and Majors, most "meetings" were not easy, but John was always there. Everything I asked him for he would get for me even sometimes the impossible (except for the pink flamingoes, but that's another story). I asked him one time late at night in Iraq if he wanted to skip a meeting. We'd been up since 0600 and he said Hell no you can't buy this kind a entertainment, plus your the one getting yelled at. When I came in the next day, without being asked he had already been working on some of the issues and getting it "fixed". He always knew the mission and the priorities and could get people to do things they really didn't want to do. When we got back I felt a special bond and would do anything for John. I feel a great loss that his life was cut short before I had the chance to enjoy this deeper friendship in peacetime. I salute you John you did it right, Thanks for "covering" my back I never worried what was coming up behind me, I knew you had it. I just had to deal with what was ahead.

Teresa, we met only once at John's last high school reunion. It was an honor to meet the woman who stole John's heart. I've know John (to me he will always be little Greg Bailey) since elementary school. We were good friends in our younger years, but drifted apart throughout middle and high school. However, he always had a friendly hi and smile for me as we passed in the halls. That was Greg, always smiling and always friendly. My fondest memory of Greg will always be when he gave me his class picture from what I believe was third grade. He was so proud because he wore his scout uniform. I can still see that picture in my mind. I thought he looked so handsome and now realize he was destined to be a "man in uniform". My heart goes out to you in so many ways because you are living my worse nightmare. You and your family have been in my thoughts daily since I heard the news. My husband is a Maryland State Trooper and I pray every day when he goes to work that he will return to me and our four kids. It can be so hard to let the love of your life go off to a job that is so dangerous, but I've always taken comfort in the fact that my husband loves what he does. I know there is nothing I can say to ease your pain and I wish you and your family didn't have to go through this, but please know that my thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with all of you. Remember a cop's wife is a special breed and we are so much stronger than we can ever imagine. Stand strong, cry when you need to, hold your children close for their are the fruit of the love you and Greg shared and may Greg's love wrap around you and your family like a blanket and comfort you in your time of sorrow.

I first met John in 1998 when I re-enlisted in the guard. He was first my squad leader and eventually my platoon sgt. in A co. 640th before I transfered to B co. 1/140th. It was apparent at the onset that John was a fine NCO who took care of his troops. John and his troops worked hard during our deployment and kept our aircraft going even though we were flying them many long hard hours. It was rare to not see John smiling. If you didn't like John it was because you just hadn't met him yet. I am honored to have served with him and I am a better person for having known him. Mrs. Bailey my wife Martha and I and our family send our most sincere condolences to you, your children and all of Johns family. John will be missed always.

To the Bailey family, my family and I grieve for your loss. I was priviledged to have known John in both the CHP and the National Guard. He was always cheerful and helpful and I will remember the smile he always had on his face. I hope it is a comfort to you at this time, to know that your loss is shared with the countless members of the CHP and National Guard that John has touched over the years. We will all miss him very much.

The sadness that I felt the morning when opening an email informing me of this, was such as losing one of my family members. SFC Bailey was one of those likeable soldiers who always catch your eye. I always expected more of John and he always came through. He is a true citizen of our country in the fact that he layed his life on the daily by being a member of Law Enforcement and the Military. Truly a hero in my eyes! His loss will be felt throughout all of his families, and he was graced by having three families to become part of. I have shed tears all day and will continue to miss one of my Soldiers. It is hard to lose Soldiers in whatever way they are taken, but SFC Bailey truly loved what he was doing both Civilian and Military. He hopefully will be remember for many years to come, I know I will.

My heart is aching for all of you. I went to school with Greg, and have fond memories of riding the bus with him when I stayed at my sister Pam's house. I remember being scared to ride the bus with kids I didn't know. Greg always let me sit beside him, and made me feel comfortable. We became great friends...and remained that way through the rest of our school years. I was so proud of what he did with his life! He was very passionate about everything. I'm so glad I got to connect with him and his wife at our last High School Reunion. Trust me when I say that all of us from the Class of 1987 are deeply saddened, and please know that prayers are being sent from us here on the East Coast. God Bless you all.
