Anna E. (Dillow) Umbenhauer, 96, died Thursday, June 23, 2022, peacefully in the home she shared with her husband, Elwood, for the past 67 years. She and Elwood were married 74 years.
Anna was born March 9, 1926, to John H. and Anna E. Smolinsky Dillow.
Following her graduation from Pottsville High School, Class of 1943, Anna worked as a bookkeeper for the former Hummel's Furniture Store and then as a teller at the Miners National Bank.
After her children were in school, she returned to Hummel's and then worked for the Pottsville Area School District in the Mt. Hope Elementary cafeteria. But her best job was that of being a wife, a mom and a grandmother.
She loved to cook, but also enjoyed going out to eat. Vacationing with the family, especially camping, and vacations to Acadia and Sanibel were special times for her. She loved the holidays when all of the family could get together and she would cook the meal. Simple things like going for rides on the back roads and watching the birds at home meant so much to her.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Schreader (wife of George).
Surviving, along with her husband, are a daughter, Diane Umbenhauer (wife of William Schaefer), Lansdale; a son, Robert (wife Debra), Pottsville; a brother, John H. (Jack) Dillow, Pottsville. Also surviving are a grandson, Dr. Andy Schaefer and his fiancée, Dr. Naomi Clayman, of Mountain View, California; a granddaughter, Dr. Emily Schaefer, Greenville, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.
She was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church and was very active there, teaching Sunday school with the youngest children. The church nursery was dedicated in her honor.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 27, at James E. Humphrey Funeral Home, Pottsville, with the Rev. John Wallace officiating. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday.
