Charles Spiess Obituary


August 10, 2008

Charles W. Spiess Sr., 91, of Mechanicsville, died Sunday at Schuylkill Medical Center- South Jackson Street, Pottsville.

Born in Cressona, March 24, 1917, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Spiess.

He was a 1934 graduate of the former Soldier's Memorial High School, Port Carbon. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a self-employed carpenter.

He was a member of United Presbyterian Church, Pottsville. He was also a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Port Carbon.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Natalie Shay Spiess, in 1983; and four brothers, Harold, Joseph, Robert and Albert Spiess.

Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Audrey Winterer Spiess; daughters, Charlotte Ann Kupstas, Bethlehem, Margaret Rhein, Pottsville, and Rebecca Spiess, Pottsville; sons, Dennis Spiess, Delaware, and Charles W. Spiess Jr., Pottsville; a stepson, John Spiess, Spring City; a sister, Mary Fernsler, Lebanon; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Religious services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at United Presbyterian Church, 214 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, with the Rev. Manuela Kauer officiating. Interment with military honors will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Port Carbon. Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are by James H. Evans Funeral Home Inc., Saint Clair.
