Howard J. Klinger, 97, of Suedberg Road, Pine Grove, passed away Friday, April 16, 2021, at home.
Born May 18, 1923, in Outwood, he was a son of the late Roy and Mamie Klahr Klinger.
Howard was a longtime member of Suedberg Church of God, Pine Grove. He attended the one room Outwood School House and Pine Grove Area High School. He enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and bicycling well into his 90s.
Howard served in the Army, beginning Jan. 18, 1943, serving with the 3513 Ordnance Medium Automotive Maintenance Company. He served in Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland during WWII. He was discharged Dec. 13, 1945.
Upon returning home from WWII, Howard began a career with Bethlehem Steel Corp., where he worked his way from "mucker" to blaster and foreman. When Hurricane Agnes closed the Cornwall Ore Mine in 1972, Howard worked at Millard's open pit quarry until he retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1974. He then worked for the Pine Grove Area School District as a custodian where he retired again in 1988.
Preceding him in death were his wife of 59 years, Marian B. Klinger, a brother and three sisters.
Surviving are a son, Dean H. and wife, Lola Klinger, of Pine Grove; a daughter, Lisa J. Klinger, of Kooskia, Idaho; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jim Klinger, of Puyallup, Wash., and Richard Klinger, of Friedensburg; nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, at Suedberg Church of God, 898 Suedberg Road, Pine Grove, with Pastor Terrence Jansma officiating. Interment will follow in Suedberg Church of God Cemetery, Pine Grove. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer contributions be made to either Suedberg Church of God, P.O. Box 106, Pine Grove, PA 17963, or Compassionate Care Hospice, 3897 Adler Place, Building C, Suite 180, Bethlehem, PA 18017, in his memory. H.L.
