Joseph Scully Obituary

Joseph J. Scully Sr., 82, of 42 Church St., Lost Creek, passed away Tuesday morning at Saint Catherine Medical Center Fountain Springs.

Born in Girardville, Oct. 13, 1929, he was a son of the late Thomas and Margaret Wagner Scully.

He was a graduate of Girardville High School.

He worked at the Summit Station Rock Quarry, later retiring from A&E Products Inc., Ringtown, after 27 years as a machine operator.

An avid lover of music, he was a guitarist and a member of the Blue Notes Band for 45 years.

He was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Ashland, and the Musicians Protective Union, Local No. 170, Mahanoy City.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Meriam Hancock Scully, in 1998; a son, Ronald, in 1970; and siblings Mary, Thomas and James Scully.

Surviving are a son, Joseph Scully Jr. and his fiancé, Karen Merritt, Lavelle; a daughter, Barbara, wife of Dennis Coogan, Pottsville; a brother-in-law, William Hancock, Lost Creek; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Scully, Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, Stephanie Barlow, Brian Scully, Danielle Coogan and Jocelyn Merritt; nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 11th and Walnut streets, Ashland, with the Rev. John Bambrick, pastor, as the celebrant. A viewing will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home, 1323 Centre St., Ashland. Private interment will be held in Annunciation Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home, Ashland, is in charge of arrangements.

So sorry to hear about the loss of Joe. He was one of my favorite customers when I use to work at Redners and always made it a point to come over and say hi to me. He was such a kindhearted man and I am so sad to see he has passed. He will be greatly missed.
