Peg (Margaret Ann) Carpenter
April 13, 1938 - July 28, 2024
Peg (Margaret Ann) Carpenter, 86, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2024, at Presbyterian Manor, SC. A strong-willed, creative and independent woman, she was stricken with Alzheimer's 6 years ago. She is predeceased by her parents, George and Dorothy Nichols. She is survived by her husband, Chuck, and her daughter Amy, her companion Tao Zervas and their two children, Aiolos and Athena. She is also survived by her son Andrew, his wife Mary Katherine and their son, Roland.
Peg was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 13, 1938. Raised in Milwaukee WI, she attended undergraduate school at Lawrence University. She then attended the University of Illinois, where she earned a Master of Arts and a PhD in English Literature. At the University of Illinois, Peg met Chuck and it was there that they were married. She served as an Assistant Professor of English at both the University of Illinois and at Penn State.
While at Penn State, they adopted their first child, Amy. Shortly thereafter Peg left her post at Penn State. Two years later, Andrew was adopted. Peg devoted herself to raising her young family, teaching both children to read before they entered school, at the same time perfecting her skills as an accomplished pianist. Eight years later, she and her family moved to Oxford, OH, where her husband taught at Miami University for the next twenty-five years. In Oxford, Peg turned to gardening a 2/3 acre lot, an endeavor she took to with special joy. This is where the children grew up and moved on. They next moved to Berry College in Rome GA for eight years before moving to Florence 19 years ago. During this time, Peg continued to garden, transforming two more yards into green and flowering oases. A life-long knitter and sewer, Peg taught herself the art of spinning and dyeing her own thread and yarn, which she wove into fabric upon a large loom she assembled. Her award-winning projects were shared on her self-created web blog and the weaving guild she belonged to.
A life-long classical music lover, Peg enjoyed immensely going to concerts and and singing herself. Peg was a faithful Episcopalian, serving as choir member, lay reader, and active participant of various women's discussion groups. The family is deeply grateful to Presbyterian Manor for the especially high quality care given in these last years.
