Steven Weingartner Obituary

Steven Matthew Weingartner died August 20, 2023, at home in Florence SC, peacefully and unexpectedly in his sleep at the age of 62. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 31, 1960, to Joyce and H. Martin Weingartner, and grew up in Rochester, NY. He completed his senior year of high school in Nashville, TN and earned his bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University, and an MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas. Steven was a respected Business Instructor and taught Marketing, Management and Business courses in the Technical and General Education Department at Florence-Darlington Technical College for 18 years.

Steven's academic career spanned three institutions and several decades and included, at one time, being the Department Chair at FDTC. He fostered his students' educational growth by teaching essential academic life skills and course objectives. Steven played an integral role in expanding Florence-Darlington Tech's International Program, creating comprehensive cultural programs with universities in Germany and Denmark. He was a favorite exchange host, and through his leadership, the Business Department received a national award from the Community Colleges for International Development.

Steven was a loyal friend and colleague, loving son, brother, uncle, and pet parent. He learned to sail on Lake Ontario and was an accomplished varsity wrestler in Rochester and completed his senior year at the University School of Nashville. A true Renaissance man, his many passions included art, travel, photography, gardening, and racquetball. Steven is best remembered for a full-hearted laugh that brought a smile to all.

Steven was a formidable opponent much to the chagrin of teammates, knees, and elbows. He was a competitive, fair athlete, whether playing racquetball, bowling, basketball or chess. Steven devoted a great deal of time to his home and loved attending to his ever-growing, tropical garden that included year-round light displays. Over the years, he poured love and great care into his Great Pyrenees and cats. One of Steven's great passions was traveling throughout Europe, visiting art museums, and creating exquisite travelogues. Inspired originally by Dutch artist Escher as well as Picasso, Steven created unique, colorful art with dynamic patterns and multilayered shapes that synthesized into a single image.

Steven is preceded in death by his father, H. Martin Weingartner and is survived by his mother, Joyce T. Weingartner of Nashville, TN, his sister, Susan De La Paz (and Andrew; children Elena and Tony) of Bethesda, MD, Eric H. (and Glenn M. Smith) of New York City, and Kenneth L. (and Marilee Tolman Weingartner; children Lee and Hannah) of Nashville, TN.

Please join us in a celebration of his life on Saturday, October 28th, 2023, at 1 pm in Florence, SC. More details are forthcoming and for more information please contact smw @ n24x7.com.

The news of Steven´s death shocked me; my heart sank with pain and grief. I have known Steven for over 15 years as a former colleague and personal friend. After my departure from Tech we still kept in touch, sharing happiness and distresses. He came over to see me and my wife at our Atlanta home many times and we thoroughly enjoyed his visits. I admired him as an open-minded person, a devoted educator, a loyal friend, and one who loved life. Steven was a wonderful man with patience, kindness, gentleness and self-control. His absence will be felt always.

He was an excellent teacher and wonderful guide into another culture that widened my heart to the lives of Germany. He told his mind and was massively passionate about education. I'm gonna miss him very much

Steven and I worked together at FDTC for 15 years. He was a great co-worker who surely made me laugh! I will miss him and his talks about his pets.

Steven arrived at FDTC about the same time as I (I in 04, Steven `05). We worked in different departments, but worked on many projects and committees (faculty senate) together. The last a couple of years before I retired, I would say he became one of my BEST friends at Tech. I will never forget how he went out of his way to throw me a retirement party during the Covid. I am just heartbroken about this. Steven was a good man who would go out of his way to help others without expecting anything back in return. It is difficult to pass by his office each morning as I go tutor part time without speaking to Steven. I will miss him...

Steve was a good guy. We were friends for the 17 years I lived in South Carolina. I just has lunch with him two days preceeding his death. After his heatlth scare, he seemed stronger and more vibrant than ever. I figured he would outlive me. The news of his death took the wind out of me. I send the deepest condolences to his family.
