Alice Tripp Obituary

Alice Tripp, 96

August 22, 1918 - September 11, 2014

Alice Raattama was born on August 22, 1918, in Nashwauk, MN, the 7th of 8 children in a Finnish-American family. When she was young she and her brothers and sisters spent summers at the family cabin at Crooked Lake; they took saunas, drank clean spring water and swam across the lake.

Alice was a good swimmer. At the age of 6 she was the mascot of the Nashwauk H.S. swim team and performed fancy dives during the meet intermissions. Her love of lakes never faded. She swam until well into her 90's.

After high school, Alice attended Hibbing Junior College where she met John Tripp in chemistry lab. She completed her post high school education in Wisconsin, graduating from Lawrence College. A couple years later she married John Tripp. He was a chemical engineer, and his work took them to many places including Chicago, Detroit, Colorado, (where they built a log cabin), Maryland, (where they raised calves and chickens), and Michigan.

In 1957, they decided to pursue another dream; they wanted to farm, so John and Alice and their four children moved to a dairy farm near Spring Hill MN. She milked cows, sold eggs, gardened, cooked, and also wrote short stories, poems and painted water colors about the farm experience.

After the kids left home, Alice took a job teaching English at Belgrade High School, where she taught for 10 years. It pleased her that over the years she continued to come across students who remembered her fondly.

In the early 70's Alice and John joined a power line protest. They met an array of activist farmers, feisty women and professors.  As a result of her involvement in the power line protest, Alice ran for governor. She and her running mate, Mike Casper, ran a campaign from the bed of a pickup with a solar powered bullhorn offering voters an alternative energy source. They didn't win the primary, but did surprisingly well and earned a mention in Minnesota history books.

In the early 80's Alice and John sold the farm and moved to Scandi Lake where they lived for 25 years, taking saunas and swimming almost every single day except when the lake was frozen (but sometimes they chopped a hole in the ice and jumped in).

Alice is survived by her children, Christine Scott, John Tripp (Anita Wallace), Michael Tripp (Freya) and Margaret Tripp, 5 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Her husband, John, died in March of 2014, and her grandson, Peter died in 2005.

Alice will be remembered at a gathering at the family cabin at 11:00 AM on Sunday, September 14th. The cabin is at 30855 Scandi Drive, Glenwood MN 56334.

She lived at Talahi Care Center for several years, and her family is grateful to the Talahi staff for the thoughtful care they gave her.  The family is also grateful to St. Croix Hospice for their gentle assistance at the end of her life.

After the parade in Spicer, this past Fourth of July (2014) I went to Scandi Lake to take part in the memorial for John Tripp. John was the husband of my High School English teacher, Alice. And, they had a farm next door to a farm that my dad bought when I was in the 6th grade (It is the farm on which I operated, and was able to rear a family, and teach them the value of hard work).
Alice is remarkably sharp for 95. She is failing, but with a little help, remembered some of my stories from High School and the farm.
When asked in computer security security questions, what teacher had the most influence on me, my answer is always, "Ms Tripp". As a high school student in the late 60's and early 70's, we were living in the age of protest. The Viet Nam war, Kent State, The Race Riots, Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King's murder, and not long after, Watergate, all happened in that era.
Nearly every song written in those years had a message. Bob Dillon, Niel Young, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Simon and Garfunkle, Don McClean, etc. all had a message in the music they wrote. Ms Tripp brought that music to school and challenged us to understand the message.
Today, Ms Tripp and I sang a couple lines of John McClean's "American Pie" together!
As result of the "Power Line Struggle in the 70's, Alice ran for Governor of MN in 1978. With no budget, she garnered 195,000 votes! Recently retired (at that time) former President of the U of MN, Malcom Moos, got about 9,000.
Great to see you Alice!
