Joseph M. Schmitz age 44, of Paynesville, died on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the St Cloud Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, March 31, 2014, at the Paynesville Lutheran Church. Burial will be at a later date. A visitation will be held at Paynesville Lutheran Church on Sunday from 3-7:00 pm with a Catholic Wake Service at 7:30 pm, and continue one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred. Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville. www.hafh.org (320) 243-3618.

Joseph Mark Schmitz was born on August 7, 1969, in Paynesville, the son of Clarence and Martha (Thielen) Schmitz. He grew up in Roscoe, where he attended school in Paynesville graduating in 1987. After high school, Joe entered the United States Air Force. He served his country receiving an honorable discharge on July 11, 1991. Joe returned to the Paynesville area where he attended Alexandria Technical College and earned an A.A.S. in Law Enforcement. He then began working in Paynesville as a Police Officer. While working for the Paynesville Police Department, Joe also received his Taxidermy License and started Schmitty's Taxidermy.

On April 27, 2007, Joe was united in marriage to Stacy Landborg at Paynesville Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with a son. The family made their home in rural Paynesville where Joe continued to work for the Paynesville Police Depart- ment and part time for the Cold Spring/ Richmond Police Department. In 2012, Joe began working for the Sartell Police Department where he worked until his death.

Joe loved the outdoors; especially hunting, fishing, and gathering. He also enjoyed traveling, collecting guns, and raising animals, especially hunting dogs Joe's son was his pride and joy and he loved spending time with him. He also loved being a police officer.

Joe is survived by his wife, Stacy; son, Andrew; mother, Martha of Roscoe; siblings, Denise (Daniel) Olson of Chanhassen, Jim "Riley" (Jan) of Cold Spring, Michael of Castle Rock, CO; sisters-in-law, Rhonda Lowers of St. Francis, and LaNae (David) Ashton of Aitkin; mother and father-in-law, Dennis and Merlyn Landborg of Aitkin; nine nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his father, Clarence.
