Frederick Gowen Obituary

SEATTLE, Wash. - Frederick Arthur Gowen, 87, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at his home after a brief illness and several years of poor health.

He was born July 8, 1923, in Boston, and raised on his family's farm in Stratham, N.H. He lived in Santa Barbara from 1997 to 2007 and moved to Seattle in 2007.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash.

He received his bachelor of science degree from the University of New Hampshire, and his doctorate in plant genetics from the University of Minnesota in 1956.

Mr. Gowen spent most of his professional career as a professor and researcher.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Florence Wen Gowen, originally of Peking, China; his daughters, Iris Gowen, of Bangkok, Thailand, Robin Tiffney of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Melody Gowen of Seattle; five grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Ellen Waugh of Riverdale, Md.

WE REMEMBER: He spent most of his career in various locations in Nigeria, arriving prior to independence in 1960. He was evacuated from what was Biafra during the civil war and returned to Nigeria when the war ended in 1975, finally to retire from university teaching and research in Nigeria in 1987.

Services will be held in Santa Barbara.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Swedish Hospice, 6100 219th Ave. SW #400, Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043.

I had the priviledge of meeting Fred Gowen through Melody. He was so proud of and involved with his grandchildren. Now I read what a fascinating life he lived as well. I know he will be missed by many. My condolensces to the entire family.
