Gertrude Clapp Obituary

PORTSMOUTH - Gertrude A. Clapp, 84, formerly of Manchester, died Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at the Clipper Harbor Home, due to complications of Alzheimer's disease.

She was born Jan. 29, 1926, in Manchester, to Edward C. and Gertrude (Kuhn) Jache. She was the seventh of 16 children. She was the widow of Gene Clapp, who died in 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Trudie (Leeds) Bergeron and her husband, Glenn, of Greenland, and Sandy (Leeds) Jenkins of Manchester; two sons, Norman E. Leeds Jr. of Hooksett and Charles Leeds and his wife, Jan, of Hooksett; four sisters, Helen Vermette of Manchester, Florence Guimond of Florida, Mildred Stimpson of Manchester, and Shirley Noyes of Londonderry; brother Lawrence Jache of Manchester; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by eight brothers, Charles, Edward, Ernest, Walter, Clarence, Robert, Richard and baby Carl; two sisters, Doris Beckman and Virginia Szopa; and her first husband, Norman E. Leeds Sr.

WE REMEMBER: She was a graduate of Manchester West High School, Class of 1943. A 48-year member and past unit president, she was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Merrill Follansbee Unit #37, Hooksett. She served as the unit's treasurer for 20 years, and held many officer and chairman positions. She was a past director of District 4, and a member of the past presidents parley and eight and forty, #226 Hillsboro, and also served as Departemental Chapeau and held many positions in these organizations. She was a very patriotic person who loved her country, her family and her friends.

Prior to retirement, she was employed with Hannaford Supermarket in Hooksett. Earlier, she was employed with the Brick Tower in Concord, W.T. Grant in Bedford, and Marion Electric in Manchester.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Cain & Janosz Funeral Home, 74 Brook St., corner of Pine Street, Manchester. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, in the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert Fellows of the Community Congregational Church in Greenland officiating. Burial will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to consider the American Legion Merrill Follansbee Unit 37 of Hooksett, c/o Sandy Jenkins, 40 Garland Ave., Manchester, NH 03103, or the Community Congregational Church, P.O.
