PORTSMOUTH - Lewis Munroe McNeil, Jr., 90, died Sunday, February 24, 2019 at The Pines of Newmarket. A proud lifelong resident of Portsmouth, he was born on June 1, 1928, a son of Etta and Lewis McNeil, Sr. He grew up on one side of Whipple Street and then moved into his grandmother's house on the other with his beloved wife, Rita; they lived there together for over sixty years.
As one might expect of someone who only ever called two houses "home," Lewis's life was defined by loyalty, especially to Portsmouth and his family. He never missed the chance to tell stories about the city and its history, often informed by his own work as a carpenter, a volunteer firefighter, and a civilian planner at Pease Air Force Base. He found joy in walks around the neighborhood, lunches at the Ice House, gatherings at St. John's Masonic Lodge, and reunions for the Portsmouth High Class of 1948. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he worked hard to improve both his own home and his daughters' and loved having the whole family together for holidays, clam bakes, and trips to Disney World.
Lewis was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Richard McNeil; and his wife, Rita. He is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Linda and Randy Briolat of Portsmouth and Pam and David Hamilton of Dover; his four grandchildren and their spouses, Megan Hamilton and Mark Hempstead of Melrose, Mass., Randy and Sarah Briolat of Kittery, Maine, Kelly and Ken Daynard of Dover, and Ryan Briolat of Portsmouth; and three great-grandchildren, Harrison Hempstead, Lewis Hempstead, and Ruby Rita Daynard.
