Mary Gaudet Obituary

YORK — Mary M. Gaudet, 88, of 6 Netherby Lane, died Friday, June 6, 2008, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

She was born June 28, 1919, in Boston, the daughter of Norbert F. and Ruth C. (McMurray) Brink. She attended schools in Boston and graduated from Hyde Park High School.

As a young woman, Mary worked as a secretary and office manager at McNulty Real Estate in Boston and at Buckley Iron Works in Dorchester, Mass. She left the work force to marry Earl J. Gaudet of Boston on Nov. 24, 1945. Together, they raised six children and lived in several states as Earl pursued his career in the paper industry. Mary filled her free time with rug hooking, sewing and antique hunting.

After Earl's death in 1977, Mary returned to work as a secretary/bookkeeper at York Auto Center and then the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1985.

She became an accomplished painter in her later years and created impressionistic works in oil of landscapes and still life. Modest about her painting talent, Mary often gave her paintings as gifts to grateful family and friends. She was a devout Catholic and communicant of St. Christopher Catholic Church in York.

Mary will be remembered for her strong will and views, her hospitality, great sense of humor, and love of family, friends and church.

Survivors include her children, Robert Gaudet and his wife, Susan Cooper, of West Roxbury, Mass., Earl J. Gaudet Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Epping, N.H., Jeanne Snell and her husband, George, of Dover, N.H., Paul Gaudet and his wife, Janet, of Winterport, Gregory Gaudet, of Bangor, and Marie (Terry) Gaudet, of Lebanon; a sister, Lorraine McDonald, of Milton; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; good friends and neighbors Maryann Parnell and Geraldine Geary; and many nieces and nephews and their children.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, Earl, brothers Francis and Robert, and sister Ruth.

SERVICES: There will be no calling hours. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 4 Barrell Lane, on Tuesday, June 10. Burial followed in First Parish Cemetery. To the Gaudet Family,

My brother Jim spoke eloquently for the Geary family but I want to leave my note of sympathy as well. Your mother was a lovely woman and has been a wonderful neighbor to Mom all these years, especially since our dad died. Jim's right when he says its like you have all become an extended family to all of us. Mom always includes your family news in her updates during our phone conversations. Thank you for sharing Mary with us.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

To all the Gaudet Children

I was sad to hear that your mother passed away and I am very very sorry that I was not able to make it down to York today to pay my respects. Mary was a good friend and neighbor to everybody on Sunrise Terrace, particularly my mother. When my father was sick some 20 years ago Mary was always there for support. I loved the way they looked after each other over the years. You guys have all been so good to my mom, she talks about you like family. I cherish the painting that rests over my mother’s fireplace. Mary poured all of her feelings into that painting of our family home on Sunrise Terrace. The Geary family will always have a piece of Mary, Earl, the Gaudet children, and all of the wonderful memories of Sunrise Terrace thanks to your mother.

God Bless all of you. Louise and I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

I lived next door to Mary on Netherbee Lane (Sunrise Terrace) for 20+ years. She was a wonderful neighbor. I always enjoyed our chats over our rocky boundary line . I remembered how proud she was of her family and how she enjoyed when they all came to visit. She got quite a kick out my dog, Otis and Casey, the cat when they visited her yard, they both knew she was a special lady. I was fortunate enough to see many of her paintings; what a gift she had.
Sincerely,
Rich and Donna Fernald

I worked with Mary many years ago at the Shipyard. She was wonderfully cheerful and always made me laugh. When my first daughter was born in 1982, I commissioned Mary to paint a clown on canvas. In 1985 while expecting my second daughter, I felt frightened and insecure. I asked Mary how I was ever going to love this second child as much as I love my first. Her answer was quick and heartfelt. "Love isn"t divided," she said in all her wisdom, "It multiplies." I have used her words often throughout the years. I included them in a sermon I gave at church many years ago when I served as Deacon. They have also provided comfort to young mothers facing the same anxiety I had faced years earlier.

I would like to gift this painting to anyone in Mary's family who would love and cherish it - maybe even a grandchild yet to be born. Please contact me if you would like to have this remembrance of her.

Sincerely,
Tina Lincoln
