Shirley Lien

KITTERY, Maine - Shirley Lien, of Kittery, Maine, passed away quietly on Friday, August 11, 2017 in York Hospital. Daughter of the late Leander Lamagdelaine and Helen Giaconia, Shirley was born in Hartford on August 25, 1933 and grew up in Salem, Conn. She graduated from Williams Memorial in New London in 1951 and then attended Mitchell College. After marrying Darwin Lien in 1973, Shirley moved to Kittery, Maine, where she made a home for her family and lived until passing this past week.

Shirley had a passion for helping others, beginning with helping her mother to assist veterans during WWII. She continued this work as a member of the VFW Auxiliary, serving as President of Post #168 in Portsmouth, N.H., President of District 7, and Grand MOCA State President. She was also active with the Women of the Moose, Community Council of Senior Citizens, Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, and Adult Daycare Center for Alzheimers.

Her hobbies included crocheting, crafting, and cake decorating. She also enjoyed playing bingo and traveling. Shirley had a great sense of humor and a sharp wit - always knowing how to draw a smile out of even the most reluctant. For this and so many other reasons, she will be greatly missed.

Shirley is predeceased by her three brothers, Gerald, Bruce, and Paul Lamagdelaine, daughter, Lilian Vachon, son, John Coy, nephew, Jeremiah Pomerleau, and husband, Darwin Lien (CWO, U.S. Navy).

She is survived by three children, Nelson Vachon, Katherine Barrett, and Darwin Lien, Jr, five grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
