Sam was a hardworking resturant owner.
He was the brains behind the Market Street Pub, witch was the destination of the 70s and 80s.

Jill, My sincere condolences to you on the loss of your Dad. Like many here I grew up knowing Mr Jarvis and Mr Jarvis. I lived just up the road from Harry and both were friends of my Dad. I found out today and I still can't get over it. I was lucky to run into Sam a month ago as He and Ed Thibeault were having lunch . I now feel blessed to have had that time. My heart goes out to you. We have wonderful memories from an earlier epoch in Portsmouth's history, when Sam Jarvis was such an influence and role model of community spirit and graciousness. We had Salamandra Glass studio & gallery, and Sam suggested The Metro display our glass to help showcase local art. He was a lovely man.

There is a short list of people who were largely responsible for making Portsmouth the great little city it is. Sam was one of them. His restaurant was one of the bright spots in the city and Sam was always there with a smile and kind words. Even later in life, when I'd see him at Planet Fitness, he always remembered my name, asked after Janet, and had a good tale or two to tell. He will be missed.

As is true with so many others, Sam has a special place in my heart. Always welcoming and the supreme gentleman, he also helped launch my career by asking me to give a workshop for him and other local restaurant owners in the late 70s at The Metro. His smile and warmth blessed our community for years. RIP, Sam. ML Hannay

I was fortunate to have met Sam and his wife Katherine back in the 70's when I worked in New Castle's Great Island Common during the summer. During those 15 summers at the park I got to know Sam and learned how he loved his work and his community. Sam made a difference and will be truly missed.

A person like Sam is one in a million. I feel lucky to have met such a kind and humble human being and will miss our conversations about any and everything and the life advice he shared with me during my shifts at Edgewood. My condolences to the family for such a great loss- I hope you find comfort in knowing that on many occasions Sam shared his pride and happiness in feeling fulfilled in his life and felt he had lived it very well. Rest easy, my friend.

Sam Jarvis gave me my love of Portsmouth's more recent history, particularly the years he grew up in one of the city's main restaurant, Jarvis and later, in my day, The Metro. I will never forget that when I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease before anyone knew what it was, Sam always had his chef at the Metro make me a gluten free meal. God bless you, Sam. May his memory be eternal.

My deepest condolences to you, Jill. Sam was everything you shared about his life and more. He had his own flavor of TLC that he bestowed on each of his friends, business associates, customers, and family. His heartwarming gift of genuine hospitality was a rare treat. Charlie and I shared many happy memories with your family, both business and pleasure, and Sam had that knack of blurring the lines between the two - such a kind man. He and your mother blessed and enriched our lives in so many ways. Praying for your peace, comfort and strength during this time...
