Bill was my best friend in Jr High High School and frosh year in College. Yes he was a
jokester. He kept his
spare chair n his work area wired and would shock the unwary.I did learn after a time or two to disconnect all wires to that chair. Miss those good times Bill.

Bill Guy was a long time friend through both professional as well as our mutual avocational interests in amateur radio. I have many good memories of Bill that I will never forget. These include, among others, travels through the old Soviet Union in 1978 to research labs to figure out why the Russians had such restrictive microwave exposure limits, operating amateur (ham) radio in Finland when I assisted in stringing up a wire antenna from Bill's upstairs hotel room to a distant tree down on the ground and using sign language with a guy at a Finnish gas station to "rent" an old car battery so we could fire up Bill's radio that he had brought with him so we could talk to hams all over Europe, working in the IEEE SC4 meeting at Bill's lab to help create the 1982 IEEE C95.1 standard, more ham radio endeavors outside of Boulder, CO on a mountain top where Bill, Reed Holaday (another ham) and I operated our low power handi-talkies on VHF to talk to other hams a hundred miles away, etc. and a salmon fishing trip off the west coast that Bill arranged one year. Some great memories.
I am so grateful that Bill responded with his thoughts on an early draft discussion paper that John Bergeron and I have put together on the present RF safety standard. Bill was exceedingly practical and pretty much spot on in his assessment of RF exposure. He often shared with me details of his many experimental measurements related to RF dosimetry that have proved very useful in my better understanding of the hazards of RF over the years. I'm going to really miss him.

Bill Guy was a highly respected and generous member of the faculty in Bioengineering and Electrical Engineering. I knew him as a new member of the faculty of Bioengineering and, a few years later when he helped me to evaluate an instrument that I developed to measure the respiration of premature monkeys in incubators. The instrument used a radar unit that was developed originally to open doors automatically. My colleagues and I were concerned that the use of microwave radiation might cause damage to the developing infant monkeys. Bill advised us with the development of an experiment in rats to test the radar unit. We measured the signals generated to illuminate developing rats and found that there was basically no damage. We were able to use the device safely to evaluate breathing in premature monkeys. Bill was generous with his time and gave excellent advice, always delivered gently and with good humor.
Later I was a part of a research project between the Regional Primate Research Center and the Cardiology Institute of the Soviet Union. Bill had already done pioneering work on the interaction of electromagnetic radiation and biological tissue. He had a rich experience with Soviet Scientists. Again, he offered the wealth of his experience. He collaborated informally with our research team, led by Dr. Orville Smith, to host and entertain our Soviet colleagues when they were in Seattle. We had fine times together with the Soviets and enjoyed Bill's graciousness and humor in both formal and informal situations.
Bill was a first-rate example of a superb faculty member. He led with gentility and humility while always ensuring that the science and human interactions were impeccable.

We were treated like royalty by Bill and Vivian when we visited Washington last summer. As Son-in-law Terry's brother and family, we were distant relatives but they welcomed us with open arms and opening their house for our multi-day visit. Bill gave our fishing loving son a tour of his prized personally narrated fishing videos. He also gave us the scoop on what to see and do on the Olympic Peninsula. They couldn't have been any kinder. We remember too the multiple times he spent hours scanning my dad's slides, delivering them to Terry for him to present us with a Christmas DVD of memories. Though a man of great personal accomplishments, he was always humble, kind, welcoming, and generous. We have great memories of our time with them. Dan & Sue Zimmerman and family.

Sorry to learn of Bill's passing. He was a giant in the field of biologic effects of electromagnetic energy. More important, he was one of the good people.
