Charles DeJong Obituary

Charles D. DeJong

1960 ~ 2013

Charles Douglas DeJong, 52 of Edmonds, Washington passed away on June 9, 2013 surrounded by family after fighting brain cancer for nine years. Charlie was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, but spent most of his childhood in Wenatchee, WA. He graduated from Washington State University in 1982 and George Washington Law School in 1985. He met and fell in love with Karen Auer at WSU in 1980 and they were married in July of 1983. They have three daughters, Katherine (24), Erica (22), and Allison (20).

Charlie began his law career in the Washington State Supreme Court as an Intern, and thereafter practiced in private law firms in the Seattle and Wenatchee areas. He joined Microsoft in 1997 where he was employed until 2009. After leaving Microsoft, Charlie joined World Vision where he found his true vocation leading Major Donor Ministries. He was recognized many times throughout his career, and he received the President's Servant Leadership Award in 2010 from World Vision.

Throughout his adulthood, Charlie was committed to service in both his community and his church. In Wenatchee, he was instrumental in local business recruitment and development, particularly in promoting the building of the Wenatchee Performing Arts Center. His work with Camp Agape NW, Holy Apostles youth and adult ministry, and the Parish Council demonstrated his unwavering commitment to his faith.

Charlie loved his family, his dogs, good literature, art, and music. Some of the best times of his life were fly fishing with family and friends, cheering his daughters ("Charlie's Angels") on at soccer games, and winning at Scrabble. He had a dry sense of humor and a caring heart that persisted to the day of his passing.

Charlie is survived by his wife Karen, daughters Katherine, Erica, and Allison, parents Dave and Faye of Wenatchee, brothers Jon (Tracy) of Wenatchee, Eric (Kim) of Seattle, and Bob (Jill) of Bellingham, parents-in-law Gene and Kathy Auer of Mill Creek, sister-in-law Barbara (Earl) Bardin of Mill Creek, brother-in-law Steve (DeeAnn) Auer of Gresham, and nine nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly.

Charlie was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, the Washington State Bar Association, Phi Beta Kappa, Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church, the Federation of Fly Fishing, and various environmental organizations.

Charlie faced the challenges of his illness with great courage, grace, and faith. We will miss him dearly.

The viewing of the body will be June 13th, 6:00 - 7:00 PM prior to Trisagion service at Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church.

The funeral service will be Friday, June 14th at 11 AM at Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church 19421 Ashworth Avenue North, Shoreline, Washington.

Funeral arrangements are by Washelli Evergreen.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations are made to the Charlie D. DeJong Educational Scholarship Fund at Holy Apostle Greek Orthodox Church or online to World Vision.

Dearest Karen, Katherine, Erica and Allie~
My heart continues to ache for you and your families. I loved Charlie and all that he believed in and stood for. Besides, who else would bid up and my deserts?!! His good deeds, strong character and living the strong Christian life that he did will live on in all we see around him, his family and his church.

I met Charlie as a freshman at WSU. He was a great leader at Sigma Nu and always had time to talk and give me good advice. Charlie was always a great role model of Sigma Nu's values of Love Truth and Honor. Tell everyone up in heaven for me Charlie "Go Cougs"

Karen, I am grateful for the few years I was blessed to know Charlie. The way he took interest in people's lives and gave of himself to better everyone was a truly admirable quality. I have missed him since he left here in January and grateful for the chance I had to visit with him a few weeks back. May the Lord's peace be upon you and the rest of your family during this time.

Dear Dave, Faye, Jon, Eric & Bob,

What fond memories I have of Charlie and your family while growing up with you in our neighborhood in Wenatchee. I remember loosing my dad at 13 and how patient you all were with me even though I was going through so much. What beautiful people you were! I think back and smile at some of the silly antics! Oh what we put you through Dave and Faye!!! And the good times at Wenathee High School during the seventies! My thoughts and prayers are with all of you, Love Michael

A beautiful tribute to a loving and caring man. What a strong man and such a good role model for all he did, all he loved and all he treasured.

Karen, my love, thoughts, and prayers are with you and your girls. I was just crushed after learning of Charlie's passing. I warmly remember Charlie from our time at W.S.U. He left a lasting impression on me. He invested in my life as only he could. He was an inspiration and example to me in so many ways. I fondly recall how precious he was. I also extend prayers to Charlie's extended family, that they may be comforted. Karen, I can only imagine how difficult this time is for you and your girls. May many around you love and care for you in the days ahead. May our hope in Jesus Christ cover your family until we see Charlie again soon. With love and respect for all Charlie gave to this world to make it a better place. Love, Mark Gelman

I am so sad to hear of Charlie's passing, but grateful for the memories I have of him during his years as a parent when his daughters were students at Eastside Catholic. We had many thoughtful and interesting discussions about life, cancer, soccer and our shared faith in God. I had a deep respect and admiration for Charlie and the way he lived with his illness. I often forgot that he had cancer because he was so focused on giving his life to others. May the angels lead him into paradise!

I offer the prayers and love of everyone here at Eastside Catholic to Karen, Katherine, Erica and Allie. We are with your during this time of grief, but also so very grateful for the gift of Charlies life.

Blessings of peace,
