David Mitchell Obituary

David William MITCHELL David Mitchell, age 60, passed away suddenly, of a heart attack, on Oct. 21, 2006. Born on Aug. 4, 1946 in Seattle, he was the youngest child of Ruth and Mike Mitchell. He was a loving father, brother and friend. David grew up in Seattle and started skating at the age of 8. A member of the Seattle Skating Club, he often had a solo in their yearly ice show. He went on to be a member of The Ice Capades, and it was while touring Japan that he met the mother of his beloved daughter, Tiffany Mitchell. David never lost his love of skating and attended competitions until his death. David was a skilled carpenter and left his mark on many homes in the Seattle area. He loved the challenge that remodeling presented. He was a loyal friend to many people and was always willing to drop everything to help them out. David had a gift for gab and a keen sense of humor; he loved to share his joke of the day with anyone who would listen. He had a great love of animals and will be missed by his two wonderful cats. David is survived by his daughter, Tiffany; sister, Joanne Mislang (Mike); brother, Michael Mitchell; and nieces: Christine Mislang, Becky Baruck (Steve) and Michele Mislang (Nate Parkinson). He was preceded in death by his parents. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Luke Catholic Church, 322 N. 175th Street, Shoreline, Wa., 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name to the American Diabetes Assoc., 1730 Minor Ave., Seattle 98101; or the charity of your choice. Arrangements: Beck's Funeral Home, Edmonds, (425) 771-1234.

With a heavy heart and tears in my eyes do I write this entry. I too first met Dave(blades) online, but quickly got to meet him and spend many a fun time at various skating events with him, whether it be debating politic, chatting all things skating or just having a drink, relaxing and talking about life in general. I was so happy that my husband got to meet and "party" with Dave when he was in our city for a skating event. Dave was a unique, smart, compassionate, witty and wacky man who will greatly missed by the many many people he met and lives he touched. My heart goes out to his daughter TIffany whom he always talked so proudly about!....goodbye my Hawaiian shirted friend.....

I am so sad, to hear this news today. He truly truly will be missed, and my heart goes out to his daughter Tiffany & family.

I had the privlage to have met him, back in 2002 at the Canadian Championships. He truly loved the sport of skating, and will be truly missed.

Am so sorry to hear the news about 'blades'. I first bumped into him on a figure skating message board, and always thoroughly enjoyed his postings, whether they were about skating or life in general. He will be missed terribly by the skating community.

blades -- if you're reading this -- I hope there's a big rink in the sky for you to skate on and a bright Hawaiian shirt for you to wear.

Many fond memories of David have come to mind over the past few days. I was always amazed at how many people he knew and how easily he could talk to anyone about anything. I would see him talking to one group and then before I knew it he would be with someone else. I always knew if he was at a competition he would come looking for both my mother and me. I don't think a competition went by without us at least having a few conversations in the stands or a meal or a drink at night. There are certainly great memories from many stops along the way that I will always remember. To Tiffany, please know that your father was a friend to many and he will be missed. To you and your family, I send deepest condolences on behalf of my mother, Rose Dole (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia), and myself. I hope it brings you some comfort in these difficult days to see the outpouring of affection from his extended skating family.

David, your colourful presence will be missed, to say nothing of your hilarious commentary, at skating events. We were richer for having known you. Our sympathies to your daughter, and family.

So sorry to hear of Blades' passing. I met him on the internet first and met the legend in person for the first time in Hamilton at Canadian nationalsin 2002....and at many skating competitions after that. I always looked forward to seeing him at competitions, having a nice chat - enjoying his humour and knowledge & love for the sport. Competitions will never be the same again! My sincerest condolences to Tiffany and the family.

Your thoughtful comments will be missed at Figure Skating Universe. Even though many of us were never able to meet you offline, you will be remembered fondly by the thousands of people who love skating even more because they had the opportunity to chat with you. Tell Sergei, Sonja and the gang we send a "hello".

There is an old saying, "you can choose your friends, you cannot choose your family." Dave was a dear and valued friend who we chose to make a part of our family. We will miss the jokes, the advice, the arguements, and all the laughter. We were all the richer for having known Dave ... we will truly miss him.

The world seems dimmer today for Dave's passing. What a funny, astute, kind, thoughtful, hilariously wry man he was! I'll miss sharing political (left-leaning) discussions with him, and his annual Thanksgiving Day tribute to the 60's with a few bars of "Alice's Restaurant".

Warmest wishes to the light of his life - Tiffany, and the rest of his family. Thanks, Dave, for letting the rest of us get to know your brilliance.

Dear Joanne and Mike:
I am so sorry to learn of David's recent passing. He never got older in my mind...I will always remember the "gumming up of the clock". He was such a cute and funny little kid and I know he was as charming as an adult.
My sincere sympathy to both of you and his daughter.
Love,
Diana "Bobbie" Wood Hill

I'm so sorry to hear of Dave's (blades') passing. I first met him in the old ISU chat room on the internet shortly after the World figure skating championships in March 1996. He was a completely outrageous, funny, warm character. He developed a fondness for attending Canadian skating events, and I was finally able to meet him in Calgary in 2000. Over the next several years, we met up again in Mississauga, Edmonton and Halifax. I will miss the random phone calls from Seattle where he just wanted to chat about the latest skating news/gossip, or what was going on in US (and Canadian) politics. Tiffany (and the rest of the family), you have my most sincere condolences.
