Donald Tuttle Obituary

Donald MacGregor Tuttle

November 20, 1965 ~ September 24, 2016

Donald MacGregor Tuttle, beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and godfather, passed away on September 24th, 2016 from cardiac arrest after battling vascular disease.

The same words come up again and again to describe Don: kind, gentle, complex, visionary, adventuresome, brilliant. His great passion in life, starting at age five with his first boa constrictor (Friendly), was critters, the creepier and more vilified, the more he cared. He was an advocate for all things wild and vulnerable, and by the time he reached his 30's this had morphed into a global perspective. Articulate and dedicated, Don's concern for earth and its biodiversity was profound. Fearless, creative, and never daunted, and always in pursuit of conservation solutions, he packed more experiences in his fifty years than most would in one hundred.

Don graduated from Lakeside School in 1984 and attended the University of Washington. He was a graceful athlete and since childhood, a passionate and beautiful fly fisherman, angling for more species in more bodies of water than we can name.

In true entrepreneurial style, Don founded two companies that failed before founding Jadora LLC in 2008. The third time was the charm. Today Jadora is a pioneering company, devoted to sustaining the world's forests through carbon offsets, while providing vastly improved conditions in the villages within its sprawling boundaries. Jadora currently manages an area in the central Democratic Republic of Congo the size of the state of Michigan and is constantly adding territory. http://425business.com/special-report/value-forest/.

During decades of travel, often by the most primitive means, to some of the most remote places on earth, Don dealt with everything from malaria and jungle fevers to playing host to never-exactly-diagnosed or identified microbes. Still, in recent months, as his health issues became more apparent and challenging, he reflected often and happily on his life choices, repeating his ongoing devotion to sustainability and his own gratitude for having made the choices he made and having had the experiences he had. A recent entry in his own travel journal reads: "So grateful for awesome travels, people, missions and opportunities to do what I do..." He had two quotes that appeared everywhere: "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" - Wayne Gretzky, and "Joy and pain, like sun and rain." To those we would add, "I did it my way" - Frank Sinatra.

Don will be hugely missed by his family, friends, and countless Congolese villagers whose lives he did, and will continue to, transform. He is survived by his parents, Lyn and Jerry Grinstein and Tim and Toby Tuttle; his sister Kirsten Sharp (John Sharp); nephews Simon, Graeme and Harry; stepbrother Charles Grinstein (Krista Grinstein); niece Elise; grandparents David and Jane Davis and Monique Hussong; many aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family.

A celebration of Don's life will be held at the Seattle Aquarium located at 1483 Alaskan Way, Pier 59, on Sunday, November 20th at 6:30pm. All are welcome, and in true Don Tuttle style, will be very causal.

What can a mother say...? Along with my beloved husband, my two babies are, always have been, and always will be the most important thing in my life, and I miss my son every single day, every single minute. Even the memories that make me smile start with a now old and painfully familiar dart of pain. I deeply hope Don continues to be remembered with love and laughter by all his old pals and family.

What irony, Don - sweetly poetic, really, tgat your nephew, Simon, is following in your footsteps - masters in forestry from Duke! - and headed to the Congo on a project for his firm. It would be so wonderful if there were crossover of missions....
Love you so much, baby. Miss you miss you miss you.

Holidays will never be the same without you, my baby boy. Nothing will. You made THE best cranberry sauce, and gave the oddest, sweetest, and most unusual gifts. You cooked, you laughed. The painful hole in my heart will never ever heal. I love you,my baby boy.

Hi Don, we miss your energy. Wish you were here to laugh at things while pushing us forward to protect the planet, feed kids, and save species, like you always used to say.

Don was a warm soul I very much appreciated spending time with--though not enough time, as it turned out. We worked together studying iguanas in the Bahamas, where I witnessed and admired his boundless enthusiasm and energy. I always wanted to travel with him to Africa, which he described to me in such glowing terms, but circumstances got in the way and now I can only visit there without him. You will be missed, Don. I will send a letter with a small package your parents.

I just found out. Don, no. This cannot be true.

I have wonderful memories of hanging out together in Miami and Copenhagen. In Miami, we had a great time visiting with each other and discussing ecosystem restoration. We then had a wonderful time in Copenhagen.

Don, thank you for your kindness and spirit, pursuing as you always said: "Protecting trees, saving species, feeding kids"

I met Don in 1986 in California when I took up a job with the parents Mr and Mrs Grinstein. They all received me as family. He came to Cameroon about four years ago looking for ways to improve the livelihood of the people in the forest areas and we had lunch together. I will miss Don so much.

Affable and confident, Don was a friend and neighbor, an advocate for a better world, and a big believer in me, which makes it so difficult to endure his departure.

I felt lucky to have known you Don, as your passion often empowered my own. I'll sincerely miss our talks about life, business, frogs, family, and chess. I only knew you for a few years, but as tears roll down my face typing this, I will remember you forever.

I haven't talked with Don in 17 years but we had a great run in the 90's living together in the UDistrict, going to the UW, and countless fishing and hunting trips. I remember the first night moving into our apartment we knocked the fire sprinkler head off trying to get the couch through the door. It was a big building so four fire trucks showed up. No need to worry about the security deposit anymore. Kirky, I hope you and the family are doing okay. Wish I had reached out to Don over the years. He accomplished great things. Warmest regards, Dave Jobs
