Dorothy Carrig Obituary

Dorothy White Carrig

With her daughters Helengael and Judy holding her hands, Dorothy passed gently into the next life on January 13, 2019 at the grand age of 102. She was born November 21, 1916 on a homestead in Grass Range, Montana the second youngest of nine surviving children of Ida A. Klahn and George H. White. With an iconic ranch childhood of little money, hard work, harsh weather and riding her mustang pony to school, she longed for a better life. Leaving home at 16, she worked for many years in Helena until, when as conductress on the bus lines, she met her future husband, Ed Carrig, at his cafe; in the bus depot in Butte. One day she told him she was moving to Seattle and he said, "Hold on while I get my things, I'm coming too." They married, moved to Seattle in 1940 and soon both were working for The Boeing Company.

After WWII, Dorothy retired to become a full-time homemaker and mother. She raised four children on Capitol Hill shepherding them through St Joe's, Holy Names and off to college. In between she bowled with her girlfriends, canned fruit, put up pickles, sewed clothes, baked scores of cookies, perfected the best apple pie and hosted holidays feasts for extended family and grateful bachelors.

With Ed's retirement, they played couple's golf, traveled to Europe and Hawaii, and looked forward to their annual road trip to Montana with the grandkids. When Ed passed in 2000, Dorothy's travels and nights on the town were spent with her girlfriends Marion, Lilah and Helen. Dorothy enjoyed her 4 o'clock Tanqueray Gin and tonic, dining at Ray's and jazz at Bake's Place and Jazz Alley.

She was predeceased by her husband Ed Carrig, "the one closest to my heart," and her beloved son Terry. Dorothy is survived by her daughters Michele Carrig, Helengael Carrig, Judy Mahaffey (Garry), daughter-in-law Linda Carrig, 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Our deepest thanks to her loving caregivers: Linda Carrig, Naomi, Paul and staff at New Hazen Senior Care and Evergreen Hospice.
