Edward Gowey Obituary

Edward Archie GOWEY January 24, 1923 ~ August 29, 2007 Ed was born in Seattle, WA, the middle of three children born to Clarence Lawton Gowey and Harriet Eileen (Eagle) Gowey. He grew up on Queen Anne Hill in the historic Ankeny-Gowey house, and attended Queen Anne High School. Shortly before graduating from high school, Ed began working at Fisher Flouring Mills, first as a messenger. Within less than a year War World II had begun, and Ed left his job in early 1943 to serve in the Army Air Corps, stationed primarily in the Fiji Islands. After two years overseas, he returned home in 1945, reclaimed his job at Fisher, and headed off to college with thousands of other returning GI's. At church he met a young woman from North Carolina who had come across the country to visit her aunt and uncle after the end of the war. Ed and Donnie were married September 6, 1947 in Woodleaf, NC, and returned to Seattle to begin a life and family together. Ed graduated from the University of Washington in 1949 as an accounting major, earned his CPA license in 1952, and began steadily moving up in the accounting department at Fisher, eventually becoming Controller and Corporate Secretary of Fisher Companies. He was very proud of his nearly 52 years employment with Fisher, retiring in 1992. Ed and Donnie were long-time residents of Lake Forest Park, raising their six children in the home they purchased in 1952. They were members of Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church, and both were active in the church for over fifty years. Ed taught Sunday School, served as an Elder and was church treasurer for many years. Ed was a loving father who throughout his entire life devoted himself to the well-being of his family. He was endlessly patient with children, loved to tease and joke, and was unfailingly generous with everyone he knew. He delighted in his grandchildren, enjoyed their antics and applauded their successes. He never faltered in his faithfulness to his family and his God. Ed was predeceased in 2006 by his wife of 59 years, Donnell Bailey Gowey, and is survived by their six children and their families: Joanne Gowey Winston (Alan) - Kathryn Hearn Ponio (Albert) and Eliza Hearn Penick (Levi); David Gowey (Debbie) - Robert Gowey and Lisa Gowey Collins (Jeff); Michael Gowey (Debbie) - Tyler Gowey and Caitlin Gowey; Elizabeth Gowey Jones (Casey) - Zack Jones, Shannon Jones, Heather Jones, Megan Mackenzie, Ian Jones and Rhiannon Jones; Douglas Gowey (Ellen) - Sara Gowey and Patrick Gowey; John Gowey (Clarissa Hsu) - Kayla Gowey and Amanda Gowey. Ed was also predeceased by his brother, Lawton Gowey, and is survived by his sister, Kathryn Gowey Bellis, and by his nieces, Marcia Gowey Townsend and Linda Gowey Cutshall. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 22 at 3:00 p.m. at Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church, 17440 Brookside Blvd. NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155. Remembrances may be made to Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church, Heifer International, P.O. Box 8058, Little Rock, AR 72203 (www.heifer.org) or Northwest Harvest, P.O. Box 12272, Seattle, WA 98102 (www.northwestharvest.org).

Uncle Ed, warm eyes, friendly grin, ready for a good chuckle, always remembered to call on our birthdays and anniversaries after his brother, my father, died. Sweet, kind, resourceful, loved his children and grandchildren, faithful husband, hard worker, simple joy of serving others because he knew he was loved by God and returned that love to others.

I am sad to say goodbye to Uncle Ed. Happy that he is reunited with his Lord and Savior and so many members of his dear family.

Love especially to his kids and their children.

I have very fond memories of Uncle Ed - his sense of humor, thoughtfulness, and love of his family and his God. I cherish all our conversations over the years and am sad he's not there to chat with any more. However, I love picturing him in heaven, reunited with Donnie, Grandpa and Grandma, and Dad. I love you Uncle Ed!
