Ernest Parker Obituary

Ernest William (Bill) Parker

Bill Parker was a true Montanan. He was born in Helena, Montana on March 23, 1930, to Ethel Mundt Parker and Ernest Parker. He passed away Wednesday, October 29th, at Virginia Mason Hospital with his family by his side.

Bill was an activist, adventurer, & real people person. He felt his Creator had blessed him with so many benefits, that his role in life was to pass it forward. His entire life was devoted to helping others with his God-given talents wherever and whenever he could.

He considered his greatest achievement was asking his wife-to-be to a Demolay dance when they were juniors in high school. They went together for over 6 years before marrying in 1951 & had recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. They are very blessed to have such a wonderful family; 5 children (Lori Jennings, Robert Parker, David Parker, Christie Parker, and Alison Haven); 12 grandchildren (Bobby Parker, Caitlin Parker, Caleb Parker, Ashley Parker, Zach Parker, Amber Parker, Julia Haven, Sam Haven, Myka Haven, Avalyn Haven, Tyann Jennings, and Koryn Jennings) and are also delighted to have 2 great granddaughters, Alora Parker and Kallie Parker.

Mr. Parker received a Congressional Naval Appointment

to attend Stanford University. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy, he completed his college training at the University of Montana, graduating in 1951. He sat for the CPA exam and became a Montana CPA that year. He started his professional accounting career with Randall & Emery in Spokane, WA and was admitted to the firm as a partner in 1954. Ultimately, the firm merged with Coopers & Lybrand, an international firm, in 1973. He was designated as Managing Partner and transferred to the Seattle office as Managing Partner. He spent the last 10 years of his professional career serving as an expert witness in the firm's litigation support services department.

During his professional career, he served as President of the Washington Society of CPAs, Chairman of the Washington State Board of Accountancy, council member of the American Institute of CPAs, Director of the National State Board of Accountancy, and Chairman of the AICPA regional trial board. Mr. Parker was a frequent speaker for the society's continuing educational programs. He also was an advisor to the University of Washington and Seattle University accounting departments.

Throughout his career, Bill was very involved with his communities. He was Chairman of the Spokane Transit Commission and Deaconess Hospital Director. He was involved with YMCA of Spokane and Seattle, Atlantic Street Center, Camp Fire, Toastmasters International, and Pacific Science Center. He was President of the Kiwanis clubs of Spokane and Seattle, first CFO of the Rainier Club, Treasurer of the Hearing Speech and Deafness Center, President of the Emerald City Club, and first Chairman of the Skyline Residents Association Finance Committee. Mr. Parker was selected by the Jaycees to be named as one of the ten outstanding young men in the state of Washington in 1963.

After retiring from public accounting, Bill served as Chairman of the Board of Sea Group International, Inc., an offshore subsidiary of a major Russian oil company, and Trust Officer for Fidelity Trust Company, a private trust company for a California family.

During his retirement years, starting in 1989, he and his wife Bev enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the world with a focus on Africa and third world countries. They traveled to every continent, 68 different countries. Their favorite place was southern Africa on safaris to observe animals in their natural habitat. Sometimes the whole family would go and their daughter Christie was often a traveling partner.

Mr. Parker was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving as Chairman of the Board for both the Central UMC church in Spokane and the Mercer Island UMC church. For many years, he has been involved with the church's finance committee as Chairman. He also served on the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference Commission on Finance and Administration.

A memorial service will be held at the Mercer Island United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 2pm with reception to follow. The family requests that anyone wishing to make a memorial gift consider one of the following: Mercer Island United Methodist Church, Atlantic Street Center, the Skyline Resident's Memorial Fund, or a charity of their own choosing. Dear Bev,
We are sorry to hear about Bill's death in Oct. Both of you treated my wife Dee and I as family during our stay in Seattle. Never have we met such kind hearted and generous people. We will never forget our Montana visit together. Too many other great memories too share. Bill was a great bridge player, weak 2's was his preference.
You were wonderful neighbors. We will keep both of you in our prayers.
Bill was a great soul; a very special person.

I have worked for one of Bill's former clients for over 33 years. In 1987, when Bill was the partner in charge of Coopers & Lybrand's audit of our company, I asked him if he would recommend a financial advisor. He took me to lunch, and after I showed him my budget and investments, he told me that I didn't need to hire a financial advisor and that instead I should subscribe to Money Magazine and do it myself. I followed his advice and now am about to retire with financial security. I will always be grateful for Bill's wise and unselfish help.

Dear Bev and family,
We were away when Bill passed and I was so sorry to hear upon our return. We never actively practiced together but I always admired his leadership and equally important, his sense of humor. It was as if he never heard of a "bad day." Always cheerful, always upbeat and so well liked. He will be sorely missed and I know how keenly his loss will be felt by the family. I guess, in a way, that's as it should be. He was a great person and left a great hole in our hearts.

Dear Bev, Christie and Family,
You have my deepest sympathy and condolences at this difficult time of Bill's passing. Bill impressed me as a tremendous force of nature replete with understanding, kindness, compassion and, of course, love for his family especially, but he had enough left over for friends, colleagues and anyone fortunate enough to share his life. I will always be grateful for his role modeling and guidance with my career endeavors. There is no doubt that he will be sorely missed and I'm certain his spirit will abide. With love.

BEV&Family: My heart goes out to you in your loss. All those who knew Bill have lost a truly wonderful person. My dealings with Bill (& then Bev) originated at the bridge table at the Rainier Club but grew to extend far beyond cards as we discussed life; Travel (What an adventuresome Duo! ); theology& Faith; kids& grandkids; baseball; politics; good jokes and recently life at Skyline. After over 25 years of interaction I feel blessed to have known Bill as a true friend and model of Christian character. My prayers go out to you for the comfort and peace of the God Bill knew firsthand. We will miss his wonderful soul with you. With love and affection, Rich Matthews

What a guy! Bill was that rare person who you could always count on to lend a hand, to have fun, to share a story or two, to offer wise advice.... the kind you really needed! I will miss him and remember him always. Much love to Bev and all of the family, Elizabeth Grebenschikoff

Bill was a fine man and will be missed by all who knew him. I was a CPA in a competing firm, but I had numerous great interactions with Bill, both while we were competitors and after. I will miss seeing him, but his positive lessons in business and life will live on in me and others.

Bev & family. What a shock when I heard the passing of Bill. Such a wonderful person who loved God and was so positive about life even though he was not feeling good. I miss his visit to the office and the smile on his face. I know he is in God's loving arms resting. My sincere condolences to all of you, and may God give you the strength through this trying time. I'm a member of the Emerald City Club of Phi Delta Theta. Bill was President and host of the Club for many years and was truly a "real nice guy". He was friendly toward everyone and a leader of all. In luncheon meetings, he frequently led story telling sessions in some, told jokes in others, and invited everyone to share their latest news and experiences. Bill was a treasure that words cannot describe. Although I didn't know Bill beyond the Club, I think that I can speak for others "We will all miss him very much." YITB
