I met Fred for the first time on the top of Mount Kosciuszko in Australia. I wanted to be the first up that morning, but of course Fred and Ginny beat me to the top. They had hiked the longer backside trail. He was using the same REI pack that I had, which started our conversation. An amazing man.

I worked for Fred in 1980 to 1982 as his "girl Friday" in the medical office. He was a great teacher and encourager. This was my first job as a medical assistant and he encouraged every advancement of my training. Had I not had to move out of town in 1982, I would have kept working there. My husband and I became friends of the family, we did continue to keep in touch and I did a few transcription jobs for him. He made an impact on me for sure.

Ginny: Seems we just got your Christmas letter and then I read the obituary in the newspaper this afternoon! Fred made a huge impression on me having worked for him for the 2 1/2 years while we lived in Mount Vernon. He expected perfection and indeed I knew I should deliver that! He was a great teacher while I was there and he taught me more than my job - he taught me life's best lessons. Thank you for sharing his wisdom with me and the family. You are definitely one of the family to us.
Feel free to call any time.

I had heard Fred was going downhill. I still have his little book on mountain meds.

For many years I too have carried his backcountry medicine book throughout the Cascades. Thanks Dr. Darvill for the wonderful pocket of advice.

How I wish I could have said "Thank you" to Dr. Darvill. We carried his little hiking guide over thirty years ago. It went with us when our sons were little, and we hiked on Skyline, and other Mount Baker trails.I did look for him a bit, once the Internet came along, and I am sorry to find this connection too late.

Ginny and family... I just wanted to say how sad I am he's gone, I will miss Fred a great deal. I know this is best for him, but I feel a part of my heart has gone too. Bless you, keep you... I loved him too... Mardy
