Frederick Paulsell Obituary

Frederick O PAULSELL Jr., Entrepreneur, loved life, family, and friends with a passion. Fred Paulsell was a successful businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist and friend to legions. His business career began in New York with the investment firm of Smith Barney in 1963. He later moved back to Seattle where he worked at Foster & Marshall Inc. from 1972 through 1984 as Executive Vice President and Board Member. After the sale of Foster & Marshall Inc., Mr. Paulsell continued his career as a venture capitalist, from 1984 through 1999 becoming a founder of Foster, Paulsell & Baker and then Olympic Capital Partners. After leaving Olympic Capital Partners, he has worked with Buerk Craig Victor LLC, until his passing. In addition to these firms he was also past Chairman of the Board of TRM Copy Centers, a Portland based, publicly traded company. He continued to serve on the Company's Board of Directors. At Costco Wholesale, he was one of the first investors and instrumental in raising the initial venture capital. Mr. Paulsell has also been a member of the Board of Directors for Costco Wholesale since inception. In addition to Costco, Mr. Paulsell was an investor, and in most cases instrumental in raising funds for the following notable Northwest Companies: Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery, TRM Copy Centers, Pacific Northwest Title, Ostex, The Commerce Bank, Seattle's Best Coffee, Northwestern Trust, Quinton Instruments, Restaurants Unlimited and Plush Pippen. In addition to his deep interest in his business life, Mr. Paulsell gave of his time to the community. This was represented through his participation on the boards of many non-profit organizations. These included the Advisory Boards of The University of Washington Business School and The University of Washington School of Public Health, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of King County, Zion Preparatory Academy, The United Way of King County/ Alex de Tocqueville Society, The Seattle Reparatory Theatre, The WAC /101 Club, Northwest Hospital Board and Director of Boys and Girls Clubs of King County. Mr. Paulsell was a member of numerous clubs and organizations including: The 101 Club, The Seattle Golf Club, The Columbia Tower Club, The Washington Athletic Club, The Seattle Stock Traders, The Seattle Tennis Club, The Rainier Club, Whidbey Island Useless Bay Golf & Country Club, The Portland Golf Club, The Arlington Club - Portland, Sun River, Oregon Golf Club and Thunderbird Golf Club in Rancho Mirage, California. Mr. Paulsell, a long time Seattle resident, and current resident of both Seattle and Portland, died Tuesday, Oct. 22 of a heart attack while he slept. He was 63 years of age. He was born on April 30, 1939 in Spokane. He later moved to Seattle where he attended Garfield High School and was a member of a Garfield basketball team that won the state championship in 1956. Mr. Paulsell received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Chicago, where he played on the University's basketball team. Mr. Paulsell's survivors include his wife Susan, four children, Leigh Ann, Fred III, Michael and David, stepchildren Tyler, Jake, Tom and Lindsay Hebenstreit and Patrick O'Connor. And Daughters-in-law Michele and Karen, Son-in-law Patrick Hines. His wife Susan, children and extended family, will dearly miss him. Services will be held on Tuesday, October 29, at 3:00 P.M. at Epiphany Parish of Seattle, 1805 38th Ave. Following will be a celebration of Mr. Paulsell's life at The Seattle Golf Club from 4:30 to 6:30. Remembrances may be made to the Northwest Hospital Foundation, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of King County or Children's Hospital.

All of us here at Big Brothers Big Sisters of King and Pierce Counties are deeply grateful for all of Fred's past support and will miss his continued participation with us a great deal. We sincerely appreciate his family's generosity in naming us as one of the beneficiaries of his memorial gifts. He was truly a remarkable man and a champion of the youth in our communities.
