Harlan Barclay Dean

Harlan Barclay Dean, 84, died peacefully on January 27, 2014 at the Vista Cove Memory Care Center in Rancho Mirage, California. Born on February 13, 1929, Harlan spent the majority of his life in Seattle, Washington, where he graduated from Franklin High School and the University of Washington.

Harlan married the love of his life, Jackie, in Seattle on July 11th, 1953. They celebrated 60 years of marriage last July. Following the death of his father in 1958 Harlan began his 45 year career as the owner of the family business, Barclay Dean Inc. Guided by his heartfelt concern for his employees and passion for growth Barclay Dean Inc. endured as a successful and well- respected company where employees were always regarded as family.

Harlan was a member of Theta Chi fraternity, Washington Athletic Club, 101 Club, SPCC, both Seattle and Queen City Yacht Clubs as well as Junior Achievement. He was instrumental in the recent MOHI relocation to Lake Union. He loved racquetball and tennis and was an avid skier, zealous boater, creative businessman. He will be remembered above all a lover of people.

He is survived by his children; Donna Egge, (Steve), Mary K., Lisa, Rob and grandchildren; Ryan, Ross, Rebecca, Philip (Amber), Brittany, Brooke, Thomas and great-grandson Jameson and several cousins.

Harlan was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jackie and his parents, Barclay and Jessica, and step-mom Sara Dean.

The funeral service and celebration of Harlan's life will be held at St Bridget's Catholic Church on February 7th at 11:00 a.m., 4900 NE 50th St., Seattle, WA 98105. Reception to follow at St. Bridget's.

Family requests stories of Harlan's abundant life to be shared at the reception.

I only came in contact with Mr. Dean, in his later years. Even though he lived with the challenges of dementia, he was always personable--with a ready and enthusiastic smile for all. I've had the privilege of interfacing with the Egge family, (through NPH), over many years. I'm sure that this wonderful Christian father and grandfather, influenced the moral development of his off-spring--helping to form them into people who prize: having compassion for others and using their gifts to help make the world a more just and loving place. Thank you, Harlan, for a life well lived.

I served as associate pastor at Our Lady of the Lake Church from 1970-73. Harlan and Jackie and their family were outstanding parishioners.....so very gracious, generous, and classy. In recent years my wife and I have been involved with their daughter Donna Egge in Nuestros Pequinos Hermanos assisting thousands of children in 9 orphanages in Central and South America. Donna and Steve's son Ross has jointed his mom in that important ministry. The Dean legacy of generous service to others continues down 3 generations, and I salute the memory of Harlan and Jackie.

I remember Mr. Dean as being such a gracious gentleman. He would make frequent office calls when I worked for Mark Holland at Rainier Bank. Mr. Dean was always so upbeat and engaging. Of all the furniture salesmen that came to Rainier, he was my favorite. I am so sorry for your loss and hope that your memories bring comfort. Tove' Barth

I recall playing an occasional round of golf with Harlan at Sand Point, and how the conversations that we enjoyed as we walked the course were much more memorable than the shots that we hit. He was a true gentleman, and will be remembered fondly by all who were fortunate to cross paths with him. Mike Doyle
