James Turner Obituary

James (Jim) Spencer TURNER Jim was born in Longview, WA on May 16, 1929 just in time for the start of the Great Depression! He died January 24, 2011 on his exercise jog through his neighborhood. An outdoor advocate all of his life, he was where he wanted to be when the final bell rang. Jim graduated from Seattle's O'Dea High School, 1947. Jim served in the US Army Korean conflict. He married the love of his life, Joyce Gammell, in 1952. Received a BA in Law at the UW Law School in 1953; Graduated from the UW Law School 1955. Jim practiced civil trial law in the Seattle area for 42 years. Elected to a 3 year term as Trustee on the Seattle-King County Bar Association, and later elected its President. Elected to a 3 year term to the Washington State Bar Board of Governors; Created and organized the King County Bar Association Alternative Dispute Resolution Section; President International School PTSA, Bellevue, WA. In 2007 completed a Novel, 'A Promise Not Kept'. He was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity at the U.W. and its alumni association where he was very actively involved in the building of the new chapter house. Jim enjoyed the theatre and acting and was quite excited to be selected to the role of 'The Cardinal' in the television series Northern Exposure. Jim and Joyce celebrated their 58th wedding Anniversary in September 2010. Jim is survived by his wife Joyce and three children, daughter Diane Esparza (Dale), Mark and Brian (Ingrid), 6 grandchildren and his sister Doris A. Turner Janisch of Stretch Island, WA. Jim had many interests from the practice of law to participation in many local volunteer positions in Beaux Arts Village such as Beach Master, Western Academy of Beaux Arts, Beaux Arts Town Council and finally Mayor of Beaux Arts Village. He was elected to the position of President of the College Club of Seattle and an active member of Seattle YMCA and Y's Men Club as well as the Town Club. He enjoyed many outdoor hobbies, including skiing every year for 64 years, sailboat racing, jogging, and the Newcastle 'Y'. In 1993 he completed a successful climb of Mt. Rainier. Whatever Jim was doing, whether a town council meeting or stumping for local issues, you could bet it would not be boring and more than one practical joke was laid at his doorstep. He will be greatly missed by his family and his friends, especially those friends who did not have the time for payback for the last joke Jim had perpetrated on them! A memorial service will be held at a future date to be determined. The world is just a little bit dimmer for the loss of Jim. His wit and good humor will be missed.

Jim was my father-in-law for a number of years and my friend. He always made me feel special and he was an example to learn new things, be kind to others and when he listened to you he really seemed to care what you had to say. He smiled and laughed alot and when he stumbled in life, he dusted himself off and tried again. If I can learn a little from his example, I will feel good. I loved him and will see him again someday.
