Margaret O'Callaghan Obituary

Margaret "Margo" Claire O'CALLAGHAN Born August 9, 1945 in Seattle to Edmund and Dorothy O'Callaghan. Died as a victim of an automobile accident, along with her beloved dog, Eddie, December 18, 2005. Survived by her loving sisters, Rena Bolster (Dave), and Liz O'Callaghan; her nieces and nephews, Scott Gaylord, KC Edwards (Mike), Mike Mongrain (Kathleen), and Lisa Bolster; numerous grand nieces and nephews, and SO many wonderful friends. After being raised in Seattle and Hanau, Germany she attended Seattle U and then got her Master's degree from the UW. At the age of 29, she suffered a massive stroke that left her paralyzed on one side and unable to speak. This tragic event became the catalyst for her meeting the most wonderful people in the world, and for her to become an inspiration to all who met her. She started attending Little Bit Therapeutic Riding which developed into her life's joy - riding horses and competing in dressage competitions. She achieved phenomenal success competing in national and Euro pean competitions, and coming very close to being in the 2004 US Paralympics at the age of 60! Margo's tremendous spirit, courage, determination (stubbornness!), humor, joy and patience were lessons to us all and touched so many. We miss you, little one! Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, December 23rd at 1 p.m. St. Brendan Catholic Church, 10051 NE 195th St, Bothell, WA 98011. Hoffner Fisher & Harvey In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center, 19802 N.E. 148th St., Woodinville, WA 9800; or to Equifriends P.O. Box 856, Snohomish, WA 98291.

A great horse woman who earned her spurs the hard way, she will be sorely missed

I met Margo in the early 90's at dog training classes we both attended. She and her dog Davey made a great team. I had the pleasure to travel with her to a couple of dog shows. She was such an inspiration.

Do horses go to heaven? If so, I imagine Margo has charmed her way astride one of the finest Lipazzaner stallions who went on before her. I will never forget her excited expression as we watched a video of the Lipazzaners performing in Europe when she visited us in Maine. As difficult as communication was for her, she made it clear which steps were difficult, and which were easy. We had to rerun the video several times, and stop it while she wrote, but I learned a lot.

I was so privileged to be with her at one of her competitions in New York a few years back. I will never forget her glee as she rode around the field in the winning-team carriage. So many people in both the therapeutic-riding and able-bodied riding circles told me how she had won their hearts. Many of them came over to greet her after "spotting" her in the crowd by her distinctive laugh. (For those of you who didn't know Margo before her stroke, the laugh didn't change.)

As college roommates, we were well matched in the study habits department. Margo was pulling all-nighters with me regularly to cram for anatomy exams. She would make me take a break now and then for one of our private sing-a-longs with Edith Piaf. I think Margo loved Piaf because she was another woman with a small frame, and a big voice. I can still hear her tonight belting out 'Non, je ne regrette rien'!

Liz and Rena, my wish for you is that you master selective memory. When your mind replays the sights and sounds of Margo's darkest days, just hit the delete key. Remember her triumphs, which were only possible because of your love, support, and endless patience. God bless.

Margo...........how sad we are in Maine. I remember the good times. Seattle U/Unversity of W in the late 60ies; skiing at Crystal; dancing at the LockSpot; surviving Gentics at the U of W (all those pre-med majors! How did we do it?); that last party in the apartment you and Anne shared.

I am so glad that in the 90ies we were able to provide the medium for your first swim since 1970 in a natural body of water........namely, Branch Lake in Maine.

I will never forget your smile and your laugh,,.dare I say "cackle." So uninhibited and free. I trust that you are now in a far better place than before.

Liz and Rena, our best to you in what is certainly a very sad time.

While I didn't know Margo personally, I saw her often competing in obedience trials with her Davey. She did seem a determined person and it was great to see them in the ring together. I am so sorry Margo was taken at such a young age. My deepest condolences to the family.

Margo was a customer of the Starbucks that I worked at. She used to come in often and would be accompanied by her little dog, Eddie. I am so sad to hear of the loss of this wonderful woman and her companion. She was always full of smiles. You might have a bad day but when she walked in the store with that cute dog and a big smile on her face, it definately lifted your spirtits. She will be missed by many. Some day we will meet again.

I met Margo (and Eddie) while volunteering at Equifriends. All I did was saddle up her horse and hold him while she mounted, and then away she would go. She was an inspiration to me and I am better for having known her.

Happy trails dear heart.

I first met Margo & Davey at my vet's office 20 yrs ago. I am small & have Cerebral Palsy so we felt like we were looking in a mirror: two little handicapped ladies each with a Schipperke. We were friends right away and saw each other often at dog shows. In 2/90 Margo and Davey and I and my Schip got our CDX obedience titles. She got 2nd plac; I got 3rd! Margo was my friend. I am heartbroken that she & Fast Eddie are gone. I love you, Margo.
