Marion Chadwick Obituary

Marion Kerr CHADWICK 89, passed away at Sunrise Haven in Kent on January 16, 2011. She was born in Seattle on October 2, 1921 to Walter and Hildegarde (St Clair) Kerr. She graduated from Berkley High School in California and attended the University of Washington in Seattle before joining the United States Navy, where she served as an officer in the WAVES during World War II. On April 14, 1945 she married Charles Robb Chadwick, who survives her. Their 65 year marriage was a source of great joy to her. Marion completed her college education at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, earning degrees in education and music. She taught elementary school for many years, first in Yakima where the family lived for several years during the 1950's, and then at Phantom Lake Elementary in Bellevue. After her retirement from teaching, Marion became a competitive long distance swimmer, swimming in Masters competitions all over the world, and winning more than eight hundred medals. She wrote a book about her swimming experiences in 2005. "Tales of a Master Swimmer." Marion loved music and had a beautiful singing voice. She served as soloist in a Christian Science church in Seattle for many years. She lived her life with wonderful joy and energy. Her loves were her church, her family and friends, her home, music, swimming, and travel. She was a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston (The Mother Church), First Church of Christ Scientist, Mercer Island, Republican Women of Mercer Island and Chi Omega Sorority. In addition to her husband, Marion is survived by two daughters, Robin Chadwick, Chehalis and Marcy Woodruff, Port Angeles, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Stephen Hamilton, Everett, and beloved niece, Victoria Hawker, Seattle. At the request of the deceased there will be no services.

Marion was a grand lady. I always enjoyed her Christmas letters to see what she and Bob had been doing throughout the year. She was fascinating to visit with at the functions we attended together. She will be missed.

I feel truly blessed that I had the pleasure to get to know Marion and I know how much she is loved and will be missed by so many. Her book was a joy to read just as Marion herself was a joy to be around.

To this day, when I look out our kitchen window to watch birds feed and interact, I think of Mrs. Chadwick. She was an environmentalist before there was a word for it, she was compassionate, and friendly, and excited about her work, which was teaching. I know that the lives she touched will resonate with her energy and love of life forever. What a wonderful woman, and I wasn't even in her class.

I have wonderful memories of Marion as a masters competitive swimmer. I first met her at masters swim meets where we were both competing. I particularly remember the fun we shared in Melbourne, St. George, Pittsburgh, and Louisville. In Pittsburgh she and I would sit outside the pool and she would try to teach me all about the different birds that flew by. She was a great role model and I will miss her at the swim meets and hearing all about her many adventures in life.

My older sister Mary Jean and I both were 5th grade students in Marion's class and loved her. I remember she had a bird feeder outside the classroom window and when any birds showed up we were expected to freeze and be quiet(not an easy task for 5th grade boys). I didn't really like music much until she was my teacher.

As a child I remember Marion's amazing energy and kindness towards me. I will continue to be inspired by her commitment to physical fitness throughout her whole life.

Marion was my 5th grade teacher in 1968- an amazing, inspiring, dynamic lady & one of my special favorite teachers ever! I remember she would take the time to attend my ballet recitals & she always encouraged me. I kept in touch with her all these years, and I was surprised & touched when she attended my surprise 40th birthday party a few years ago. I wish my daughter, who is now in 5th grade, could have met her, but I have stories to share & her book to read. A very very special lady!
With love & gratitude, Laura Levitin-Wilson
