Martha Louise Dickinson Rubicam

Martha Rubicam Obituary

Martha Louise Dickinson RUBICAM Martha Louise Dickinson Rubicam died of complications from emphysema in Santa Barbara, California, on June 26th, 2008, at age 81. She was surrounded by her family. Born December 11, 1926 in Seattle, Washington, she attended Bush School in Washington Park, Garfield High School, and later studied acting both at the Pasadena Playhouse in California and in New York City. She moved back to Seattle where she married Benjamin H. Rubicam. While raising their four children, she was active in politics and volunteer work, and was an avid gardener, for which she was well known among friends and family. She had a love of camping on the wild beaches of the Olympic Peninsula, sailing the Pacific, and cross-country car camping. Her houseboat on Lake Union was a welcoming gathering place for eccentric guests, music and good food. She was never happier than when working in the garden with her hands deep in the dirt, whistling a tune, with a cockatiel on her shoulder echoing her tremolo, as she coaxed some plant to green and bloom. She will always be remembered for her elegant use of the English language, vibrant laughter, her unique and colorful character, a sense of irreverence, mischief, and uncommon wit and wisdom. She will be missed in ways large and small, and is infinitely loved. Martha is survived by her brother Nat Dickinson and wife Sally of Bellingham, Washington, and by her four children, Chris Rubicam of Seattle; Deirdre Rubicam and husband Mike Heron of Pleasant Hill, California; Shannon Rubicam and husband Rory Crowder of Malibu, California; and Leslie Jones and husband Russ Jones of Santa Barbara, California. She also will be remembered and loved by her grandchildren Kyle LaFleche, Hilary Rubicam Merrill, Jessie Good, and Lindsay and Allison Heron, as well as by a wild assortment of friends.

Dear Rubicams,
My brother Doug told me about your mom last week, and I found the notice on the Times/P-I website. It is an absolutely beautiful remembrance that captures exactly the spirit of your mom as I remember her! I was always very, very fond of her, even though the vast majority of the time that I spent with her I was a kid. I have some particularly warm memories from her houseboat on Lake Union (ask Doug about a party I attended at about 13 years of age!). What a unique and delightful person!
I hope to connect with all of you again soon.
Much love to you.

Our abundant love to Shannon, a dear friend for many years, and to Leslie who we met while Lori was playing at a Christmas party at the Floating Homes Association in Seattle some years ago. We will always remember Martha when we met her at Shannon's home in Venice, CA before Hilary was born. Within a very short time, we were able to capture Martha's true spirit and will always keep her memory in our hearts. We send our wishes and love to the Rubicam family.

All my sympathies from another Erwin. Alice, the oldest, has the best memory, but I remember the feeling we got at your house: as though we were at home. I'm so glad you all could be with her.

Regards and warm wishes

Alice Erwin, thank you for your sympathies. Mom was the best! She gave each of us, and many others, acceptance to live our lives as we chose. How wonderful to hear from you again. We loved playing with you as well. Best to you and your family.

Greetings to the Rubicam children from the Erwins. The picture of Martha as a young woman brought back many memories of going to your house to play with Deirdre, Shannon and Leslie. Your mother was so lively and so much fun, I was sorry to hear of her death.

Love you always Mom! What an inspiration you have been and will continue to be, not just for me but for the many who were touched by you. Thank you.
